How do you set to work

Hi, I'm Peter. On this style of live trap the solid lid you see on one end is the door that falls when the trigger is tripped. There is usually a couple of heavy wire rods that is attached to the outer end of the door that is connected at a swivel point and an arm that leads down to the "dog" on the side of the cage about midways. This is just a bent piece of metal that rest on another bent piece of metal that goes through the side of the cage to the bait ( Trip/ Trigger, Pan ) You lift the door up and when you do the arm with the bend down by the side of the cage will be in position. While holding that 1st bent arm move the second bent arm that is attached inside to the bait pan, into position to rest against the 1st arm. It will look like two fingers bent at the last knuckle hooked to each other. I put the bait on the pan inside before I set it. The animal will go in touch the bait pan with it's mouth or paw releasing the two bent arms that are held together by the weight of the trap door. This allows the door to fall trapping the animal in the cage. Most of these traps have a carrying handle on top but you MUST be EXTREMELY careful when carrying these traps because if it gets to close to any part of your body or a finger gets too near for example you will get bit or scratched by a highly irritated confined scared animal. It may take a couple of tries to get use to setting it without the door falling but don't give up you will get the hang of it.

How does it work?

Put bait on the pan inside then on the side of the trap there is a trigger mechanism where one arm rest on another arm that holds the doors open. When the animal messes with the bait the 1st arm will move allowing the 2nd arm to fall closing the end doors.

How do you set this trap

There will be a trigger mechanism on the side of the trap. When you raise the doors the trigger mechanism has two points where one will rest on the other holding the end doors open. I would recommend putting the bait on the trigger pan before you set the trap. When ever the animal touches the bait it causes the one arm to move in turn allowing the second arm to fall closing the doors trapping the animal.

What size trap should I buy if I want to catch shrews?

Alive or dead ? You have to remember that a shrew is small so either get a trap specific for that size of an animal. You could use one sized for a squirrel and it wouldn't get out but I think the proper bait would be the most important. I believe one of their favorite foods being earth worms.

What are the advantages of using a 2 door trap versus a 1 door trap?

Most traps open at both ends so certain cautious species have the feeling of confidence that he is going to get out again. A one door trap allows the animal to walk the whole way into the trap and past the trip plate when the doors shut ensuring even a large animal will be caught.

How can I avoid catching my neighbours cat?

Bait your trap with something sweet. Wheat bread with peanut butter spread on it is always a sure attractant, oil of anise; sweet corn and grape jelly are also suggested for nuisance animals. The majority of domestic animals are not attracted to this type of bait. If you do catch your neighbour's dog or cat you have several options:
