SOURCE: Help!!a Black screen appears when I turn on my calculator

http://oakroadsystems.com/math/ti83oops.htm#Lines

ok guys, after about 10 years of not using my ti-83, i put the new batteries in and got the black screen you are all talking about.. came to this site.. saw no solutions.. kept looking.
I've fixed my calculator, but my brain won't tell me exactly how.. but i followed those instructions..
you CAN see what is on your screen if you tilt it under the light ... just fiddle around until you can see faint writing on your screen under the black.
Press window

i have these entries in my calculator
xmin=-10
xmax=10
xscl=1
ymin=-10
ymax=10
yscl=5
xres=2

then go and press second and the down arrow to lighten your screen. it should work.

SOURCE: TI-83 Plus silver edition won't turn on.

the screen may be at the lowest dim setting, try turning it on, then pressing the 2nd key and then hold the up key and see if anything appears, if not let me know and I will try to figure out something else, I own a 83, 84, and 89 so it shouldn't be too hard to figure out

SOURCE: My Ti83 silver edition will not turn on.

I'm not sure if this will help you patchesb7; it sounds like your calculator is having issues :(
This will help others whose calculators suddenly won't turn on anymore, even after changing the batteries.

Note:
This will return the calculator to the way it was when you got it out of the package. Any data or programs have stored since will be lost.

Step 1: Remove all four AAA batteries.

Note: You will have to hold down the CLEAR button while doing Steps 2 and 3. Do not let go until after you have pushed ON in Step 3. I found this easiest to do by holding the calculator upside in my left hand with my pointer finger holding the CLEAR button so the ON button was easier to access.

Step 2: Hold down the CLEAR button (located under the arrow keys) and reinstall the AAA batteries.

Step 3: Press ON button and then let go of both buttons. The screen should say the RAM has been cleared. Press CLEAR to continue.

this might seem weird.... but have you checked the brightness of your calculator? if someone was playing with it and set the brightness to 0 it wont seem like there is anything. if u press second then hold the up arrow key it will make the screen darker. I dont know if this will help you or not but i know some of my friends like to play pranks where they set the brightness really high.

SOURCE: My kid's calculator is not working; replaced new

After a battery replacement the screen contrast may become too dark or too light. I suspect that in your case the screen is too light. To darken it
Press [2nd] key and release it.
Press and HOLD [UpArrow] until screen darkens enough.

I put in new batteries; calculator turned on but I could not clear the screen nor input any thing. Now it wont turn on.

Open the back of your calculator. There is a backup battery behind a little door that you will have to remove with a small phillips screwdriver. The only thing that I can figure out is that you either need to leave this battery out for about 10 hours and put it back in and hopefully the calculator will reset itself. If not, you might try replacing this backup battery. Hope this helps.

My ti 84 plus does not want to turn on, i thought it was battery problem so, i bought new batteries but i stil have a blank screen.

Could it be that your screen has been dimmed in error. Turn the calculator on & press the 2nd key and then the up arrow. This darkens the screen.

If this doesn't work, try taking out the backup battery. It is located in the battery compartment, behind a little door that you must take off with a phillips screwdriver. Leave it out for about 10 hours. If this doesn't work, try replacing the backup battery.

Hope this helps.

I turned on my calculator, and whenever i press clear, i get multiple "carrot" signs, when it even works. The number's will work sometimes, but i can't get the calculator to turn off....

You may want to try & reset your calculator. Take out the batteries including the backup battery behind a little door in the battery compartment. You'll need a small phillips screwdriver to take out the battery.

Leave the batteries out for at least 10 hours and then reinstall them and try your calculator again. If this doesn't work, try replacing all batteries including the backup battery.

Hope this helps.

I have a TI84 plus texas instruments i have removed both the batteries in order to reset the unit but it still has not resetted the unit. All I am getting all zeros on the screen

First try removing all four AAA batteries and the small lithium backup battery (above the four AAA batteries). Leave all batteries out for five minutes, then replace them and try to start the calculator. If this doesn't work...

Replace all but 1 AAA battery. Press and hold the "CLEAR" button on the calculator. While holding the "CLEAR" button down, replace the missing AAA battery. While still holding the "CLEAR" button, turn the calculator on. The display should read "RAM Cleared". Release the "CLEAR" button and press again to remove the message.

If that doesn't work, remove 1 AAA battery again. Repeat the preceding instructions with the "DEL" key: With the battery removed, press and hold the "DEL" key. With the "DEL" key held down, replace the battery and turn the calculator on. The screen should say "Waiting... Please install calculator software now." Release the "DEL" key. Download this program onto your computer (from Texas Instruments). Connect the calculator to the computer using the USB cable provided with purchase. Run the TI OSDownloader program and follow the on-screen instructions to re-install the calculator's operating system.

You may need to do a reset. Take the batteries including the back up battery and leave them out for about 8 hours before replacing them. If this doesn't work, you might try replacing the backup battery. Hope this helps.

I have several calculators that won't work from just not turning on to one of the buttons is broken, where can i send them to be fixed?

For the ones that won't turn on, it may be that your backup battery needs to be replaced. The backup battery is above the 4AAA batteries behind a little door with a screw. Before you go buy a new backup battery, try leaving the backup battery and the AAA batteries for about i hours and then put them back in. It could be that the calculator just needs to be reset. Good luck.

Black-Screen/Black-Pixel Fix for TI-Calculator

This will erase all memory and reset defaults.

1. Remove 1 AAA Battery
2. Press and Hold 'ON' for 30 seconds
3. Replace AAA Battery
4. Adjust Contrast to appropriate level

If this fails, try again with ALL Batteries removed including
the backup Lithium Battery.

If all else fails, try the following reset procedure:

1. Remove ALL Batteries (inc. Backup)
2. Let Calculator sit with no batteries for 2~4 hours.
3. Hold 'ON' for 30 seconds.
4. Replace all the batteries (May be good idea to use new batteries
just in case old ones were dead)
5. Turn on Calculator
6. Change Contrast to appropriate level

- Remember to use correct batteries or calculator may not work. The
correct batteries are Alkaline, Rechargable Batteries are TOO WEAK,
Heavy Duty batteries are TOO STRONG.
