I don’t think your blocking the the dispenser every time. Make sure nothing is in the way from opening the dispenser. Another thing to check is clogged holes in the wash are. The holes on the far ends of the wash arm will target the dispenser to wash out the soap. Check the wash arm for clogged holes.
Was it working before, and now has stopped working? If so, it sounds like it has poor water circulation. It might be caused by a leak. If you have not noticed a leak, it might be clogging due to hard water deposits. Do you live in a region with hard water?

Very important only use half teaspoon of soap. To much soap can cause it to leak. Also only use dishwasher soap.

This might be to simple but if the pump seems to run then check the tubes for any way that it might be blocked bends, blocks, ect. If the pump is not running, check out Sears Parts Online. They have just about every part for Danby. Put in your model number and choose a sub component with what you need.
