Unit not running; thermostat wires jumped and it runs. Replaced thermostat and it ran for 5 minutes then stopped. Jumped thermostat wires again and unit started running. Any suggestions?

I would say change the alternator out. Start with the simplest and cheapest factor first. Without the alternator keeping the engine running its hard to put it any gear.
You could have a bad cell in your battery, autozone or advanced auto can test this for you free of charge. there are other things that can be causing this as well like an exposed power wire grounding out on the frame of your car or an amplifier that powers your subs going bad as well.. best bet is to start with the battery!
I would say that you need to replace the alternator. The car was running on the batteries power. When you drove the car, it ran the battery completely dead.
I just solved this about an hour ago. It's the connection from the circuit board to the ignitor. The same thing happened to me that it ran a long time and then it wouldn't. At some point it loses spark. The large wire from the board to thee= ignitor is the culprit. Take the ignitor out and press the two electrodes to about 1/4"-3/8max. Clean the surface plate where it meets the heater and also clean the brass piece on the othe end. Then clean the brass piece on the circuit board. Slide the 2 boots down a little and expose the receptacles. Press them a little with pliers, put them on their respective connections and then slide the boots back on. It started right up and has been running since! This after I bought a new gas valve $178! Let me know if this does it for you.
You may need a new battery (alternator will keep it running once jumped but if you stop, the idle may not keep the car powered long enough). If you've never replaced the battery, its about time - they have a life of about 5 years.
