I have an hp j3680 - I have tried all HP support suggestions. 81/2 X 11 paper prints just fine. Envelopes are pulled partially by the rollers, then they get stuck part way and I either get an "out of paper" or "paper jam" error message. I have tried stacking several envelopes and a single envelope in the envelope slot, but the problem keeps recurring.

SOURCE: envelope printing

I have an older, but similar, 5510 model with the same problem. A partial solution that works about 75% of the time is to tuck the envelope flap inside the envelope and give the end of the envelope that is to feed into the machine a slight curve by gentlly bending it on both sides. Then make sure there are only a few sheets of paper in the paper tray (less than 1/8" thick stack). Position the envelope so it is only about 1/2" from the end of the paper in the tray so the feed rollers have to transport it into the machine. I also have to set the margin for the return address in Word to be 1" from the edge of the paper so it prints in proper position, but this may be a problem with my Word 2000.

Manual feed won't grab paper

If the printer works good when it prints the envelopes/label one by one, I think it works normal (because the paper is not a standard paper).

Why my HP LJ 4100 is always taking envelopes from tray 1, even when I try to print from tray 2?

Check your feed rollers in tray 2. Sounds like they are worn and the paper cannot be pulled from tray 2 so it goes to tray 1

Copied this from the specification on HP site.

It would appear not to take 5 x 7. It's the 7" is to small, 8.5 is the smallest.

Single sheet paper on my HP LJet 1100a works fine

There is a recall fix on this printer if it has specific feed problems like pulling in multiple sheets etc. Might be related. You can contact HP and they'll send you a DIY fix kit to replace the rubber that pulls the sheet in and onto the rollers.

I have had varying success with envelopes. Can you feed in the other way round? Sometimes different envelopes perform better. The peel N seal can be very difficult

Are there settings on the control panel of your printer?
Is the tray 1 the MP tray? (The one that flips towards you)
If so, can you change the settings of the Tray 1 to Envelope on the control panel?

I hope this helps.
