I unplugged the maching and replugged it and the error 41 went away. now it is telling me nearly empty black, and near empty cyan. what does the cyan mean.
Re: error 41 near empty black and near empty cyan.
First, the error 41 will eventually come back sooner if not later. error 41 means that your printhead is failing. the error that its giving you now is that your black and cyan cartridges are empty. there are 4 colors in your prnter.

Hi, If you go to your printer properties, there should be a setting whereby you have to select the option to "PRINT USING BLACK CARTRIDGE ONLY". Make sure this option is selected, otherwise your printer will use ALL colors even if you only print black. Let me know if you need any further assistance. Best wishes, Graemevm
Alright so here is the issue. When you installed the new cartridge it should have asked you if this was a new cartridge or used and to press 1 or 2 depending on your answer. This tells the printer to reset the levels. Try taking all the cartridges out and turning the printer off/on with them still removed . Then reinstall them one by one answering the used or new question when asked. Also to take into consideration is that print cartridges have a use by date. If it is not used by the recommended date then it may read as a used cartridge or not at all. Verify this date on the packaging if still available. All else fails buy another cartridge.
1. near empty. I guess your cart is at full level.: Take cart out. unplug dcp from power. leave scanner open. replug to power. machine will come up and demanding cart. insert cart. close cover. answer display if its changed!
2. press menu then start bk-copy then four times arrow up. machine will be in maintenance mode. press by help of arrow-up and set: 7 (set) 6 (set) 3 (set) start bk-copy. machine will do a power purge cleaning. when finished press 9 (set) 9 to leave maintenance mode. run a test print and set date/time again!
Take ALL carts out of the machine. leave scanner open and unplug from POWER OUTLET. Wait 5min. Replug to power. Wait until machine demands carts. Insert carts again. Close cover AND ANSWER THE DISPLAY questions if you have changed the carts. Give answer by pressing 1 (Yes) or 2 (**). You should answer for the new cart of course with 1.
My printer at work kept saying it was low on black toner. I finally replaced when I got the message Black toner supply error. I gave it a minute or two to adjust itself and when that didn't work, I turned off for about ten seconds and then restarted it. I've only had two problems with this printer and I have had to turn it off both times before it would work perfectly, if that helps anyone.
If you have used third party carts before you can't repair this problem due to the fact that the filter inside the printhead is clogged with particles. There is no chance to clean the filter. Sorry.
Do use only dye ink.
Pigmented ink is the printhead killer for brother printers!
If the firmware update doesn't work, you can reset this error.
Unplug unit. Remove offending cartridge. Plug unit back in, wait until
all startup noises have stopped. Open lid and reinstall cartridge. This
will solve the fault as long as the sensor is working.
Also, please be aware, you should not have to change a cartridge if it says "Near Empty", only if it says "Ink Empty Magenta".
Also, please make sure none of your other cartridges are empty. I have
seen this over and over. Two cartridges empty at the same time, and the
person replaces one of them but thinks they actually replaced the other
one.
Turn the power off and pull all the cartridges out. Look a the side of
the cartridge, you should see a window with a little plastic tab
sticking out. This tab should be blocked by a black float inside the
cartridge. If you cannot see the float, and the tab is clear with no
ink in it and no float tab blocking it, it means the cartridge is empty
even if you still see some ink in the bottom.
To be sure plug the machine in without any cartridges. When all the
noises have stopped, open the lid and install the cartridges. If you're
still getting an error saying either a cartridge is not installed or is
empty, then one of your cartridges is empty. Redo the previous
paragraph.
Cyan is the other cartridge in your printer that is empty.
