52 Scanner Error
Perform the following to troubleshoot a 52 scanner error:
Verify that the toner door is completely closed. If the door is not
closed, the printer will not allow the laser shutter to operate and
will present the error “52 Scanner Error” or “Door open or no print
cartridge”.
Verify that the black connecting link to the toner door hinge is
properly attached. If the latch is not properly attached (Figure 1),
snap the hinge in place, close the toner door, and power-cycle the unit.

Verify that the inner toner door is properly positioned. Snap the door
back into place at the two inner door-locking mechanisms (Figure 2).

Verify that the door hinge and upper ring are not broken. If either are
broken, the unit will need to be returned to HP or a local service
provider for service using the applicable warranty, support pack, or
contract option.

52 error is scanner related not formatter. HP has had issues with some serial number ranges of this printer having bad scanners which they will replace. You should contact HP regarding this problem.
Unfortunately there's no troubleshoot with a 52 error. As it implies it's usually the scanner bad. It sits up top- under the top cover. It connects to the Formatted Board on the left side. and there's 2 connector s at the scanner itself.

Which means Tachometer (tacho) coil on the motor may be faulty. This coil reads a
magnet as the motor turns to detect the speed that the motor is spinning
at and this in turn allows the electronic controller to set the motor
to revolve at different speeds for the various program options.
52 is an internal scanner hardware error. Unplug printer, wait 30 seconds, plug it in and power up. Problem still there...make sure printer is plugged into wall outlet, not surge protector. If error persists you will have to get the laser/scanner assembly replaced. We arn't talking about the scanner/copier assembly at the top of the printer. This is the internal laser/scanner that is used for all your printing.

This error can also indicate a problem with the shutter tab on the print cartridge.
Action
Turn the printer power off, and then turn on the printer power.
If the message persists, check the print cartridge for damage.
I think this will have to do with Hardware issues in terms of the "52 scanner error". According to the service manual, this has nothing to do with the ADF, but has to do with the Laser Scanner. The cable to the laser scanner is bad or the laser scanner itself is broken. If the cable is ok, then the Laser Scanner Assembly part number is RM1-0171. I think you could find it if you google it.
