When the machine was spinning today it made a loud short noise so I switched the machine off. When I went to turn it back on to check if it was working it wouldn't start a programme, the start/pause light continually flashes. Have tried different programmes but nothing will start. all the other lights on machine appear to be working, half load, speed wash etc. I have checked that the drum is still moving freely. and checked the pump which looks ok. What could the problem be?

Just had the exact same problem and think I may have solved it. even turning power off didn't solve it. I think what happened was that the programme had been interupted while drying. I tried everything to get machine to work afterwards but only the following worked - while lights are flashing put back to the same time I had set to dry (60) in my case and turned the dial to M for dry high heat light goes off after a short while - leave for 5 mins then press off. machine will make a noise for a short while then stop.
If this happens then machine should be back to normal.

The error message "Err" usually indicates that the wash program and option are not compatible. 40 degrees and 900 rpm Spin should be o.k.. I would try another wash program with no special options and see if the problem goes away.
