This fairly unhelpful article tells you. The best way is to use a Smartphone with google Translate on it and use the live Camera Feature to translate what you see on the screen. As I said in your other post, many of these units are for the Japanese Home Market and ONLY come in Japanese language. We see it all the time here.

try and find a menu section of the system by changing the modes of operation. If you can get to the menu section there will be a language drop down section that you can highlight and save

For Toyota Avensis from 2003:
My console has a screen with a row of buttons below it and a centre mounted knob (the enter knob)
press Menu (1st left of knob)
select SETTING from navigation menu (on screen)
oddly you need to read the foreign language to do this one)
turns out mine was in german so not too hard, third down IIRC
select LANGUAGE from SETTING end press ENTER (knob)
again, I guessed which was 'language' by trial and error
select Km or miles press knob
leave well alone lol
Let's face it, if it was in English we'd not need the instructions, just time.

To add navigation option you have to have the original screen in the car , and then you have to install the full navigation parts .
You can change the language from the menu itself
