I have a Brother MFC 8840D laser mutifunction copier/fax. I have an error message of "doc cover open" after removing a jammed document through the top feeder. I have checked that there is no papers stuck in copier feeder, but I cannot get the message to clear. I have turned the unit off and on and I cannot clear the message error. Please assist.
I am seeing Doc. Cover Open with instructions to remove original and then close cover on the LCD, the hinges look fine, what else could it be?? I've restarted the machine.I am seeing Doc. I lifted the document cover and pushed and held the sensor lever in the left and back of the open lid and the error message "Doc. Cover Open" went away and I could copy and print again.

I had the same problem with mine. Lift the top scanner, and check the hinges on the left. That error message means that the little black sensor on the left next to the hinges is not meeting flat with the unit when closed. Hold the sensor in for a few seconds, and your printer will start working properly.
Open and close the feed cover and do the same with the front cover. It seems to me that I've had to do that to clear the error before. Otherwise... I'm not sure.

I Think There is paper jammed in the printer.
Action:
Press button A, open the front cover and remove the jammed media.Make sure that there is no paper jammed in the paper trays.
Try openning the front cover remove the drum and toner remove the toner from the drum, close cover, turn printer off and on. Then reinstall drum and toner.
If you mean the top left of the doc. feeder, you remove the cover by flexing slightly, remove a phillips screw, lift the scanner cover and there's a square hole on the lid with one of those flex clip retainers that you use a screwdriver to lift.
You will probably have a broken hinge at the back left hand side of the Doc. cover. This means that the cover won't close properly at the back corner, and the cover sensing switch won't actuate.
That error happens when the left hinge in the back breaks and the scanner cover won't shut all the way. temporarily you can tape the switch that is above the hinge and when the error is gone the modes should change again. The hinge is #LP2403001.
Open ADF and close again. There must be tab in the ADF which is not pressing a microswitch located in the lower part of the ADF. IF you can locate it, try pressing it manually.
