The printer keeps saying that there is a paper jam in tray 1 - there isn't. What do I do?
Place a few papers in the tray.
Open up the top, pull out the main (green handle) thingy.
In the very bottom you will see a bar with a single large round rubber wheel in the middle, and white gears on both ends of the bar.
Manually turn the right side gear toward you.
As you do this, you will see the paper lift up and as the rubber wheel turns you will see that it has a notch on the bottom side.
Turn the gear, and watch the rubber wheel until the notch on the rubber wheel is facing up and away from you (and the paper is fully engaged).
Then put the green-handle thingy back in, close the printer, and it should work.
Apparently this resets something. I have done it a number of times - usually after a paper jam.
I've had this problem. If the above doesn't fix it try the following
'Open up the top, pull out the main (green handle) thingy.
In the very bottom you will see a bar with a single large round rubber
wheel in the middle, and white gears on both ends of the bar.'
That 'single large round rubber wheel' is the paper feed takeup wheel.. it is also the culprit!. It's easily taken out (gently) with your fingers (note orientation). Although it looks clean, it doesn't take much dust from paper for it to lose its high friction surface. Clean it with a mild detergent (probably washing up liquid will do), rinse thoroughly and dry. It should just push in to place and slide slightly to the left to latch
You may need to go through the process of rotating the wheel towards you once this is done as it does seem to reset something
Make sure your printer is on a flat level surface. Having a cord or anything else under one edge or the other, over time, will cause misalignment on the entire chasis. I know that most people don't consider this, but something as simple as a small stack of paper laying under one edge, old magazine....anything else on your desk...can cause problems. Clean out your stuff from both sides, front and back.
-Also, try a different brand of paper. Some cheaper brands don't feed or print well with this printer.
BTW...Cleaning the wheel as instructed above works excellent but remember that the little tabs on the sides of the rubber wheel are small. If you squeeze on both sides you'll bend/break the little clip and have to replace the whole feed wheel.

I did the "reset" thing, it didn't work by itself but I did remove & clean the big grey roller (I used an eyeglasses/lens wipe) and now it works. Thanks for the advice!
After trying this with the notch away from me and the paper engaged unsuccessfully, I then repeated these steps, but released the paper by turning it so the notch rotated under about 180 degrees and the paper disengaged before closing up. Just used the rubber roller itself. That seemed to do the trick for me.
