Can u upload a copy of the problem? can the faded part be rubbed off? if so its your fuser that needs replacing - very expensive. if it doesnt then in tray 1 you have a flap at the front of the tray with a laser slit glass cleaner - pull down the bottom cover at the front and put up and down the holes in front of you at the bottom. should have arrows pointing
SOURCE: scanner started scanning color photographs in black and white
The problem is simple.Someone or somehow the "TYPE OF ORIGINAL" option on ur SCANGEAR CS window.Set it back to "MAGAZINE" or "PHOTO" and it should scan in color.
SOURCE: scanned image only prints in black and white
it's tricky / annoying:
you have a preview ...
you have some of the (3) images checked
but also you have some of these images selected (blue outline)
now:
when you select (I don't mean the checking) an image you'll have to set the scanning params
again - or check them ...
if you select an image, and then set the params (like "color"), your scanned image will be in color
....
also resolution is the same way ..
especially after crating preview .. it'll be set to 300 Dpi
so after seecting one for scanning - check the resolution too :)

Had the same on my Epson Perfection 1650. I was about to throw it out but decided to take a look inside. Unscrewed and took the top off (with glass bed), then unscrewed the area that houses the scanner light and a set of three mirrors, cleaned with a lens brush the mirrors although did not see any more than one spec. Put it all back together and now it works great. not sure what I fixed, but it IS fixed. may have been put together badly in the factory as this problem happened soon after purchase. I may have knock something out of place at some point. Anyway you may be lucky too!
SOURCE: Color is terrible, even with new color cartridges.
remove the cartrides, clean the printer head with cotton ear bud soaked in after shave (use only a mild men after shave) the after shave has a low content of alchol.
If the printer head is built in the cartride then clean the head of the cartridge, if the print head is printer based you may have to open the front pannel of the printer to access the printer head to clean it using the same method.
