Try entering on the same command line your calculation followed by the ToFrac command. That should work. Here is a screen capture from a TI83Plus in complex mode (a+ib).

SOURCE: error when converting complex numbers to fraction

Not quite true for OS 2.56 MP for the TINspire with Ti84 keyboard. To convert a complex decimal value, that you just calculated, into a fraction use the command Math [1:>Frac] and it will convert the value to complex fractions
See below.

My TI 84 won't convert my imaginary numbers to fractions. I typed in 1/(1+i) and it won't convert the answer to fraction form. It keeps saying Error Data Type

The TI-84 works with real fractions. It will not convert complex numbers to fractions.

You can convert the real and imaginary components to fractions separately. For your example, 1/(1+i) is .5-.5i. Converting .5 and -.5 to fractions, you get 1/2 + (1/2)i.

How do i program my calculator to add, subtract, divide and multiply imaginary numbers and get the correct answer?

Press MODE to bring up the mode screen. Use the arrow keys to move down to the line beginning "Real". Highlight either "a+bi" or "re ^ theta i" depending on whether you want to work in rectangular or polar coordinates, then press ENTER to save the change. Press 2ND [QUIT] to exit the mode screen.

I got this in my TI-84 Plus: 32/ (6*10^23) = 5.333333E23 and i thought: 32/very large number= very small number. but my TI-84 plus says otherwise. How can i change this?

Double check: either you calculated 32 / ( 6 * 10^(-23) ) by accident, or the displayed result is in fact 5.333333E-23 (note the negative exponent). For example, 1E-3 is to be understood as 0,001.

How do you use the imaginary number with the TI-84 calculator?

If you want the answer in rectangular form, set MODE a+bi and tap ENTER and QUIT. Tap square root sign, tap (-)4 and close the parenthesis and tap ENTER. The answer is shown as 2i.
If you want the answer in polar form, set MODE to re^xi and and DEGREE. Tap ENTER and QUIT. Tap the square root sign, tap (-)4, close the parenthesis, and tap ENTER. The answer shown is 2e^90i. (2 at ninety degrees). If you selected RADIAN mode, the answer would be 2e^1.57i (2 at 1.57 radians; or 2 at pi/2 radians)
