The major contributors to backfire in general are:
1.Bad fuel
2.Weak Spark
3.Poor Timing
4.Poor seal due to valve considerations (adjustment and wear).
So here are the fixes:
These are your first line, mostly easy, fixes for backfire.
Sounds like you have a stuck valve or out of adjustment

Hi
Very possible that the valve is stuck open and piston could have hit valve causing it to bend at the head. This would cause valve not to close completely. Would have to remove head and remove valve and most likely replace intake valve.

Hi..my name is Keith..and to answer your question..Yes there is several safety switches that will keep your engine from starting..i would check the seat switch..the neutral safety switch and the blade engaged switch..the clutch/brake switch...if all these check good..then write me back and i will help your further

On many riding mowers there are two wires that at the bottom of the carb bowl, these wires go to a solenoid which closes a valve so gas will shut-off when the start key is turned off. When this solenoid is bad it will not close which let gas keep going to the carb so the eng will bang through the carb or muffer. Hope that this will Help. Hugh Lyon

If it starts cold and runs for 10 min then it sounds like the fuel cap is not venting properly, try runnin engine with fuel cap loose and see if it dies. 9 times out of 10 the fuel cap is the culprit. Let me know
A 'cranks but doesn't start" problem just needs to be narrowed down to compression, fuel,or ignition. The compression is pretty obvious-does it sound like the stater is getting a load when cranking? The next one is fuel-do you smell raw gas fumes coming out of the exhaust? The last one is spark-take the plug out and clamp it to the block, crank it,do you see a spark? If you have compression and spark, try a shot of starter fluid down the carb.(sometimes the float needle can get stuck, and just getting the engine to fire will shake it loose). If you don't have spark, then look for why(not sure if you have a magneto or ignition coil system).
