Oreck Vacuum Cleaner problem (upright)

My Oreck vacuum cleaner smells like something is burning when I turn it on and use it. I have checked the fan belt and it seems to be ok. I also checked the air flow and nothing was obstructing it and changed the bag. Has something burned up inside or could it be something else? Thank You!

My Oreck XL2 Ultra also smells like something is burning, and it doesn't seem to be picking up anything. Changed the bag, etc. HELP!

my oreck worked fine 2 days ago, then I went to use it again, and it stunk up the whole house with a horrible burning smell. I dont see visually anything wrong.

  • 68fastback Feb 16, 2008

Ours smells like smoke too, also it won't even pick up sock lint in carpet, yeah it's light but the power is not there, My wife wants to create a web site called I hate My Oreck .Com. We have already been to the store and the sales people are so hateful, they said we needed to follow the instructions on cleaing the pipe and roller, we did that did't help any. We are going today to the Oreck store to try and return it. Wish us luck

I read your comments & I just finished cleaning the handle, changed the bag & it still smells awful!! Please help !!!

  • Anonymous Feb 26, 2008

I have had the burning smell and have found the problem to be related to the belt stretching and when pressure is applied to the brush from the carpet the belt stops turning the brush and the motor continues to spin on the belt thus creating a very hot belt that eventually smells like burning rubber. You will be fooled by this problem when you turn the vacuum upside down and see the brush spinning fine when you turn it on. It is the resistance of the carpet on the brush that stops the brush from rotating. The vacuum would do much better with a height adjustment for the brush.

I changed the bag and cleaned threads from the roller but it still smells like something's burning when I vacuum. I've heard others mention cleaning the handle. How would I go about checking that? Thanks

The best solution to any Oreck vacuum problem is to replace it with another brand. You are going to continue having problems with the Oreck..Not that other brands don't have problems. But, at least with
other brands the problems don't occur as often. Belt burning up. clogs, roller brush bristle wearing down prematurely, cord breaking internally, etc.
P.S. Oreck is good at one thing. Marketing!

I had a burning smokey smell and I took off the cover and the belt was detached and burning...I could see the ash inside the vacuum. I also saw that the intake was blocked up with some paper and lint. I cleaned out the inside and changed the belt and all is ok. The belt needs to be changed every 3 months

Always change your belt every 6 months. the oreck uses the smallest motor in the industry. when you go from floors to carpet the motor slows down 30 %, and this is why they clog up so frequently. buy a riccar rsl5 with a lifetime belt and an anti clog handle tube

Your belt may seem like its ok but what it is is that it is stretched so the brushroll is slipping just change your belt or contact your local store

  • Anonymous Sep 16, 2008

i have an oreck i can answer any question regarding your orecks.here are the basics, change your belt every six months. its better to change your belt every six months than the vacuum. even if it looks good or havent used it rubber does dry.if it blows stuff and doesnt pick up the bag doesn't inflate you have a clogg. if you ware your brushroll fast then you need a two speed a lower speed creates a sweeping motion instead of a full adjutation that the hard floor does not need.folks its lack of educations of this machine that can frustrate us but it is a very simple vacuum i actually take mine every year to get a tune up.i feel like i am getting a new vacuum every year. i figure my kids play on this floor my pets lay on it and the vacuum does a dirty job why not have it cleaned every year, i do use it every day i sure am not carrying a monster every day! please ask me anything!!

How do I take the bottom off to replace the belt?

To jrican-80,

My new upright(NOT an Oreck) is over three years old and hasn't needed a new belt so far. Orecks clog very easily, and when you bring it in for repairs, or for the yearly "tuneup", what the store manager wants you to do is spend more money on the existing sweeper, new roller brush, for example. That's the reason for the yearly checkup, to BRING you back into the store so you can spend more to help Mr Oreck make more money.

Seems like you either have a connection to Oreck or simply think that an overpriced, cheaply built vacuum cleaner is actually a good machine.

If the bag does not inflate then there's a clog somewhere. Check the intake(take off the bottom base plate and right behind the roller brush is the intake, squarish looking opening). If no clog there, check the pivot that the handle tube sits in, or the handle tube itself.

My oreck is just not picking up at all the handle is empty and so is the bag!!! what is wrong with it?

A

Anonymous

Thank you! It worked great! I actually checked the handle but after reading what you said about a full bag and finding that the handle was clogged I went and checked the handle again and lo and behold there was about another half of foot long clog still in the handle. Once we removed our Oreck starting performing without that awful smell just like it did the day we bought it! We like our Oreck!

Change the belt. Oreck belts will stretch out so much that it is unable to spin the brushroller, but the motor pulley burns a hole in the belt.

Replacing the belt will take care of the problem.

I had the same problem until I checked the handle it was full of stuff because the bag was blocked . I cleared it and now all is good.

How do i fix dyson DC41 Animal vacuum upright cleaner it has burning smell coming from motor and it blew the fuse box when i WENT TO VACUUM. the wire flex is a bit over twisted

You most certainly shorted this out and will need a new cord. Easy fix but you will have to take it apart and find where it failed. I doubt the motor fried but it is possible. When you take it apart look for the burn mark left by the electrical arc. That is the point you fix.

Oreck vacuum cleaner stop and burn smell

sounds like hair or string or something like that is wrapped around the beater bar(the long brush under the head that brushes the carpet) keeping it from turning. The belt that drives the bar is getting hot because the beater bar is stuck.

My oreck xl 3800 H2 upright vacuum cleaner does not turn on. It worked fine the last time I used it. Is there some sort of fuse that may have burned out?

Usually no fuse on these.

Assume the outlet has been checked?

I'd look at the on/off switch (that is a 2 speed unit, tight?) or the diode the gives the 2-speed choice, or the power cord as my first culprits.

My Oreck Vacuum cleaner keeps burning up belts. I

I am having the same trouble. I bought the vacuum new in October 2007 when my wife and I purchased a newly constructed home. Since it is only two of us, she only has to vacuum once a month. I have taken it in three different times and get the same story. It needed a new belt. Mine has white smoke coming out of it and smells like burning rubber. I contacted Oreck and got no results. They refused to let me discuss this with Dave Oreck, stating that he nevers talks with customers! Gary Neeble
