Emerson EWL20D6 TV turns on and the picture goes right back off

This TV can't understand a laptop signal directly (for most laptops - there are some computers that have a TV out option). The EWL20D6 has S-video, component and composite video inputs. Your best picture will be to get a VGA (RGB) to Component Video (YPbPr) converter with a 3.5 mm to RCA L/R audio cable. The VGA to component video cable is meant for projectors that can interpret the RGB signal, not TVs.

If your laptop has an HDMI port, you will need a different type of converter.

Once you have the correct hardware, you will need to make sure that the external video port is active on your laptop. For some machines, you may need to enable this in the BIOS first (press Esc, F1, F2 or F10 (depending on the computer) on bootup to get to the BIOS - it may take a few tries to time it correctly). Then turn off the TV and computer before connecting the cables. Then turn on the TV and set it to the desired input before turning on the laptop. Then set the laptop to send the video signal to the external monitor. (On my Win7 laptop, I right-click on the Desktop and select Graphic Properties. Then set the desired display (laptop screen, external monitor, both) and click Apply. Then press OK when you see the confirmation box on the now active screen.)

It's the #1 plaguing issue with Emerson flat panel TV.
Normally, when this happens, the TV goes into " Protection Mode " because of a failing circuit board.
The most common thing to go out on flat panel TVs is the circuit board that supply power to the screen. Commonly called a Backlight Inverter Board.
But, I can't say it's 100% the problem because I can'tactually look at the tv over the internet. I can only make guesses with the symptom.

You have a few choices:
1. You can try leaving the TV unplugged for 30 minutes so the TV can reset itself.
2. If by chance the TV is still under warranty, go that route.
3. If you have some electronic experience, if you can find and purchase a Service Manual over the internet; It will help you diagnose the source of the problem and fix it by soldering in the new part. The Service Manual will give you circuit diagrams, test points, and part# lists.Usually, cost under $20. And most cases the new part cost less than $15.
4. Pay a TV shop to do the repairs. It maybe costly, but get an estimate of how much they will charge. That way you can decide if it worth repairing or replacing the whole TV.

I had a similar problem with my Phillips 42 in. LCD HD TV.

Here's the problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened my TV up(warranty was up of course) and found several bad capacitors. Phillips and several other companies were sold capacitors that although were highly rated failed within 5 years because of a lack of preservatives. All sorts of electronic equipment is now being effected due to these defective capacitors.
Solutions?
1. Take it in and have it fixed
2. Open it up, check the board for faulty capacitors(bulged or leaking) Buy a new Power supply board and install it.
3. Remove PSB, remove faulty capacitors and replace with compatible new ones.

the problem is a bad inverter transformer replace the bad one and the set and dvd will work fine.

the flash was the fuse inside the set blowing it usually takes out one or two diodes in the power supply section but maybeyou got lucky and its only the fuse.
