Works on 1st speed, but does nothing on the 2nd speed. This is a brand new product with brand new batteries. Am I doing something wrong?

You probably know this, but I'll mention it anyway. The bakelite gear for the A5 one-speed has 21 teeth. The bakelite gear for the 2-speed has 20 teeth. If you have the wrong one, I imagine that it would cause a problem. Both are sold on Amazon under Oster Clipper Parts.
I would take the gear out and turn it over and count the teeth. If you have 20, then something else is wrong.

Yes measure the continuity between each segment side by side they should all read the same.
Sometimes the brass contacts between the end cap and motor can bend in slightly and therfore will not create a connection try giving them a tweek outwards if so.

Its problem is cause by a intermittent power switch on-off not electrical overload. Also a thermostat problem- it's the one that switch on and off automatically the current when it reaches right temperature depending on your setting selector knob.
Have it replace that (power switch or the thermostat) by a service technician in your near area by doing that, the unit will resume normal operation.
I hope my advice help you.
