1996 evinrude outboard stalls when put in gear idles good in neutral & runs out good in gear but stalls idling in gear

Has this engine been sitting for a while?? Sounds like the carbs need cleaning and setting... a job for a professional!! A professional motorcycle mechanic can do this also!!

Coughing is usually a sign of running too lean on idling jet or sucking air somewhere

Have you checked if the vents in the engine cover aren't clogged? Maybe a rag in it or so...

Don't travel at mid speed

check your idle stabiliser-it advances /retards the ignition timing directly associated with RPM-if you dont notice any differencewhen moving the spaRK advance lever then replace it-no seviceable on mercs anyway!

hi take the prop off see if there is anything /string/ between the hub and the housing check oil lvel in g/box /is gear box nice and free if all is ok try it in ware with just a small amount of choke
drain /empty fuel out replace with fresh /correct oil mix
check /change fuel filter/air filter
warm engine up check idle mixture ajustment/tick over speed
increase idle speed slightly/7/800 rpm

While at the river try to adjust the fuel air mixture. When you are on the water it puts the engine under a load and if that dont work then dont be afraid to bump up the idle stop screw slightly.
