When operating the dryer makes a grinding noise. Like there is sand between the in/out side drums. The drum is rubbing on one side like it is out of balance.

The filter simply allows the dryer air to pass through and trap the lint so it will not collect in the exit tube or on the outer vent parts. If anything, the clothes inside the bin will just spin around and be there when you finish. The noise inside the dryer could be from something that was in the pant or shirt pocket and was floating around.
With a 10 year warranty on their direct drive washer motor, eliminating a clutch or transmission, those enerty star LG's generally preform very well. (one of my customers runs 10 loads a day, 365 days a year in his)
Sounds like the shaft may have seperated from the three spider arms which actually turn the drum. To remove, you may have to grind end of bolt off motor shaft to facilitate dissassembly. It's a rather involved process. Prevent future mold and mildew issues by cleaning out the drain filter and then using a front load washer cleaner on longest, hottest cycle with no clothes (like ahfresh or washer magic, or whirlaway hot tub cleaner, to name a few.) then use not more that one tablespoon of HE detergent and a max of a teaspoon of fabric softener (if you use it) per load, as these machines are using very little water. (when you split the tub to replace the drive spider, use a pressure washer to clean out the inside of the outer drum and the back side of the inner tub) BTW, I have not found any reason to not stick with my LG washer and dryer. My seven year old set worked many a load, and still works great.
My brand new one is doing it only after 1 week. I'm also interested in it. I'm thinking of pulling it apart and watching it and trying to find out where it's coming from exactly.
belt would squeak. but a horrible noise would probably be coming from the gear box. it may need a simple lubrication to the worst of replacing the whole gear box.
check it underneath the tub. if you can remove the housing and run it while it is open and see or hear where the noise is coming from. be careful on the moving parts once it is running with out a housing.
Look inside the drum at the seam, front and back side. The weld on the stainless steel drum may have cracked. You would need to replace part number 3045EL1002F. It is moderatly difficult to replace.
I have the same problem. Would love to know how to fix it.
