Runs out of hot water

While taking a shower, my Rinnai R75 stops making hot water. I have to shut the water off, then turn it back on to get hot water.

The hot water stops completely. I have to turn the water off, then turn it back on to get hot water again. The display does not show an error code while this is happening.

If water stops running then the solenoid is closing. Could be the pc board.

Make sure that your water pressure is at least 65lbs, comming into the unit or to the house, check it at a laundry tub, or on the drain on the water heater if not have the city you live in check there pressure, if they have adequit pressure the check your pressure reducing valve at the main water supply comming in, the unti must have the proper pressure or it will shut itself down, if the water pressure is good then on your priority button on the heater push it and raise the water temp, this should help you out, if the temp is to low it will shut down on a temp control,,

I wonder if you have this problem below caused by a drop in water pressure from someone flushing a toilet or a washing machine. I would call the company to remedy this issue.

17. What is a cold water sandwich effect? The term “cold water sandwich effect” is a term that is used to describe the introduction of cold water into the hot water supply line during frequent on/off operation of an instantaneous water heater. The cold water sandwich effect, when present, appears as a momentary drop in hot water temperature as it is discharged from a hot water supply outlet (i.e. shower, tub, or faucet). This phenomenon is present in the operation of all instantaneous, tankless style, water heaters, but is minimized with the high tech design of Rinnai water heaters.
The technology built into the Rinnai water heaters is designed to minimize the cold water sandwich effect. Rinnai water heaters are microprocessor controlled and when water flow through them ceases, they remain in a “ready to fire state” for approximately 1 minute. If water flow through a Rinnai water heater begins within the first minute following water flow stoppage, the water heater will fire back up within 1 to 2 seconds. This minimizes the cold water sandwich effect that would otherwise be experienced with a low tech tankless water heater. It should be noted that the cold water sandwich effect cannot be removed completely from tankless style water heaters. The safety standards developed to insure the safe operation of water heaters require a delay in the ignition sequence of all gas water heaters.
While the cold water sandwich effect cannot be completely eliminated from standard plumbing systems, it can be eliminated from plumbing systems that have a supply and return hot water circulating system. Rinnai has developed 2 methods to eliminate the cold water sandwich effect in residential hot water circulating systems.
The first (and preferred) method to remove the cold water sandwich from circulating systems utilizes a small electric tank water heater (powered up) that is used with a dual purpose. The small water heater acts as a mixing tank to eliminate the cold water sandwich effect from the Rinnai water heater and it uses its electric heating element to offset the heat losses from the hot water circulating system.
The second method to remove the cold water sandwich from circulating systems utilizes a small 2 to 6 gallon storage tank installed on the hot water outlet of the Rinnai water heater. This tank acts as a mixing tank to blend the cold water sandwich with hot water and eliminating its effect at fixtures.

Due to the fact there is Power and water in same area it is best to contact the company to see what can be done.

Have you tried turning it off and back on to reset unit? here is a link for Online direct support with Rinnai and also their phone number. Good luck

Our Rinnai RUR98 shakes, shushes, beeps and flashes code 12 after several minutes of shower. Turning the power off and on resets it, but would happen again after minutes of hot water use. Any idea?

Code 12 is a flame failure.
First step in diagnosing the root of the issue is to check for any separation, obstruction, or failure in the vent system.
Second step is to use the isolator kit under the heater to flush the heat exchanger with vinegar or rectorseal calci-free.
These two things are a great starting point to working on any tankless water heater. Flame failure can be as simple as the heat exchanger being clogged not allowing the sensors to work properly or the exhaust being mixed with the air intake. If the problem persists I would suggest having a Rinnai Certified Tech look at the heater.

Rinnai RL94i - Produces hot water for 3 minutes, then stops

I just had this exact problem. It kept getting worse until we had no water. Our Rinnai tankless hot water heater started the same way though, with hot water for a few minutes and then would shut off with an error code 10. We just had to shut the hot water off and then back on, wait a minute or so and we had hot water back for a few minutes. Our unit would come on with a loud vibrating noise and remain until it shut off with an error code 10 (air flow fault). The solution was to remove the blower fan and blow out the squirrel cage. Ours had moths in it. We also vacuumed out the fan housing. Be careful to mark any wires you disconnect and take pictures before removal. Our unit is now almost silent when it comes on and supplies endless hot water.

Rinnai gas water temperature keep alternating from hot to cold

A fault often found with these units is due to insufficient water flow. Usually this causes specifically the shower to run hot and cold. Try turning on more than one hot supply; if this fixxes the fault you will need to try and increase water flow. Most new tapware/showerware have water flow restictors built in. These are the cause of many problems with continous flow heaters such as the Rinnai. In taps they are usually located in the spout if it unscrews. In showers try the shower hose. Find them and take them out. Also make sure your mains supply to the house is on full.
There are more technical faults but this is something you can easily try first.

Our tanks are getting low but not empty. The hot water is running for about 20 seconds then going cold. We cant shower properly. Thankyou

Be aware that the Rinnai relys on good water flow to operate, especially in summer (bit complicted to explain why, just trust me). You need to make sire that any water filter are spotless. The Rinnai has a filter just above the mains water in tap (centre pipe) Turn the supploff first and remove it and give it a good clean.

The hot water shuts down for a few minuts then

your unit is undersized or you do not have enough gas supply to run the unit properly.
If you have to many water features running or you have to many gas items turn on at the same time it can cause problems.

Rinnai XR 20 - water temperature varies hot - cold - hot etc during 4 to 5 min shower

your gas supply may be to low to keep the unit firing while you are showering...especially if you have other gas appliances running while you are using the unit.

If this is happening after someone else has recently used the unit....then it may be a problem that some call stacking. The unit works on flow....not sure about that unit but they usually take between 1/2 - 3/4 gallon to turn the burner on. If someone recently used it and then you get in the shower...you will get the hot that is already in the line but then it takes that initial amount to fire again, thus loading the pipe with cold water.....it then comes out on you followed by the hot that has finally entered the line. Once it is past that point there should be no issue, unless it it a gas problem like I mentioned.

Loud noises

did you size the gas line properly? sometimes if the gas pipe isn't sized properly it will cause some pretty loud wistling noises. also if you have something in the fan like bugs or lots of dust it will cause alot of problems with noises

I need the manual for a Rinnai Infinity 26 hot water system

you can get it off the rinnai web site they have a spot on there to get the internet manuel,, but from what you are saying you may need to adjust the thermostat, or the temp, remember even though you will have endless hot water it still takes the smae amount of timed for the hot water to get to your faucet,, not only that make sure your shower heads aren't holding back to much water pressure, if you don't have enough water going thru the unit it will not stay lit, if will come on and go off, judt to dstisfy the unit,, make sure the filter is clear, on the cold side there is a cap screw if you take it off there is a screen in side you just pull it out and clean it and reinstal it,,

Rinnai infinity hot water service, goes hot and cold...not fun in the shower!

We had the same problem - the hot water would only be hot for 3 -5 minutes and shut off, then we had to turn the water off, wait a few minutes, and do it again. VERY FRUSTRATING.

Solution: The Rinnai serviceman showed me the heat-exchanger blower/fan: It was clogged with dust and moths.

Another clue: Our Rinnai was extremely noisy when the heat came on. After the fan was cleaned and replaced, it is nearly silent.

If you are reasonably machanically inclined:
TURN THE BREAKER / POWER OFF to the unit.

The blower-fan is located in the lower central area of the unit (at least on our unit). If you draw imaginary north-south, east-west lines through the center of the unit, the fan is in the lower-left quadrant. There is a spring clamp securing the black rubber accordian-like tube to the fan. There are two screws that secure the fan to the unit. there are two plugs that connect to the fan, as well as a third air-flow sensor that should be removed. then you can look at the fan unit, as well as the grill on the underside of the heat-exchanger that should be cleaned.

My thought was to go out and get a simple bug-screen, and place it over the air-input outlet vent going outside, but the repair guy said that although it may sound good, if that screen ever gets clogged, or reduces airflow to the Rinnai, then the unit will work harder, or even shut off, giving the same problem,
