On this style washer the motor has a belt and pully type clutch under the machine called a splutch. There has been an ongoing problem with the nut coming loose and dropping the belt/pully down which in turn hits the safety shield.

SOURCE: Whirlpool washing machine make loud noise after

Hello, have to tell you that most noises from a washing machine occur during the spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping noise during the spin, the load of cloth may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the cloths, then restart the machine. Repeat these steps if necessary.

Thanks

SOURCE: Whirlpool Duet Washer Making Loud Grinding Noise

not nesseccarrily your pump, possible you have a rear bearing going bad, which will sound as if a helicopter is coming through your laundry room. ( noisy pump can be the issue , honestly a better and cheapre problem to have) in order to determine if its apump problem you can remove the lower access panel and unplug the pump then start the spinn cycle, if it still loud the pumpms not hte issue.

Grinding noise in spin cycle

It sounds like the drain pump needs replacing, its bearings have failed or there is something from the wash jammed in it. But before you buy a new one, get the machine checked by an expert in case lots of parts are damaged.
