HP Product Assistant asks for disk that HP didn't furnish

Every time I boot my computer a window appears trying to install ''HP Product Assistant'' and asking for me to insert a disk. No disks were provided when I bought this Compaq Desktop with Vista Premium. What really bugs me is that it continues to try and install and does so throughout the day seemingly on a random basis. How can I disable this ******. HP has been zero help.

Thanks jell587 but it didn't work. Two things: the exe file you list is not found in c:\program files\hp\digital imaging\product assistant\bin\
Also when I run HP Update it does not list product assistant as an option to download.

Since the .exe file wasn't there, I can understand why it kept trying to install something it didn't have and for which I didn't have a disk.

Where can I down load the "Product Assistant" program to install it. I certainly cannot find it on the HP site.

    Thanks abain but....

There is no HPWuSchd2 under the startup tab. There is a
    HPWuSched A... there.

I am downloading the lastest software for my printer BUT I don't believe the problem is with "uninstalling" or "deactivating" Product Assistant. Rather, it keeps trying to "install' it and cannot find the proper ".exe" file to do so.

  • dcbvirginia Feb 25, 2009

IT was unchecked. I am going to try to reinstall the printer update and see if that does it. Thanks for all your suggestions.

This is my second HP computer and I won't buy another one.

    Let's try this...

Start + Run + msconfig go to "startup" tab and uncheck this entry:

HPWuSchd2 and click "apply" (this entry may be a little different than typed)

You'll be prompted to restart the machine and you will receive a dialog box upon reboot which you should check the do not show me this dialog box again and hit ok. If all goes well the error should go away, otherwise read on about a second solution to this...

You may also remove the HP assistant by:

If possible uninstall the printer software from Add/Remove Programs first.

Download and reinstall the latest driver but reply "no" to extended capabilities during the install process.

    Post back with your results...

Uncheck the application that you found in the startup. From what I've read It is a problem with that utility.

Sorry you've had to go thru all of this (as I'm sure HP is, it doesn't exactly build a good customer experience).

The HP Product Assistant is essentially an app that runs resident in memory to help with HP scanners and printers. By choosing no extras during install the assistant should either be disabled or should be much less intrusive to the end user.

Again, good luck with your problem, hopefully we've isolated it...

I've gone through the deletion of the printer programs and reinstall from the original disc, but the end process is to reboot my computer. The Product Assistant Error 2718 window prevents the close down. What should I do next?

How to parition the harddrive for windows

If You Have Problems Creating a Partition If you have problems creating a Windows partition, check the following: * The disk must be a single partition, formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If the disk already has more than one partition, you must repartition it. * The disk must be an internal disk. You cannot use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows on an external disk. * If a dialog appears saying "The disk cannot be partitioned because verification failed," try repairing the disk using Disk Utility and opening Boot Camp Assistant again. If that doesn't work, back up all the information on your computer, start up from your Mac OS X installation disc, and erase the disk using Disk Utility. Restore the information to your computer from the backup and try opening Boot Camp Assistant again.

Hp producy assistant with c4480 software. how to stop the computer trying to instal this software each time you restart

Remove the printer software driver and software completely. Install this driver only if you do not want the product assistant. Click on the link below to start downloading the driver:
HP C4480 Printer Driver (40 MB)

Other precautions:
  1. Disconnect your printer from your pc and connect when the driver installation asks you to connect it.
  2. You will need to perform this installation from an administrator account.

This driver is for Windows XP. For drivers for other Windows editions please click on the link below:

HP product assistant

I had a similar problem on my desktop Pavilion. This program is just sitting in memory and checking for updates. If your are not worried about getting updates then you can turn it off.

In the RUN box type MSCONFIG and the screen below will appear. Go to the Startup tab and un-check the box for "HPWuSchd2". Click OK to exit. You will need to reboot for this to take effect. (You can always turn it back on if any problems arise).

On startup I get a windows installer message that my HP Product Assistant is needing me to insert a disk. I have had this computer for 3 years and this just started. It is interrupting downloads, etc.

You must have a HP Printer. HP Product Assistant is not a necessary program.
Go to Start > Run. Type msconfig in the run box. Click on the startup tab. See if there is an entry for HP Assistant. If there is un-check the box next to it. Click apply then OK. It will ask you to restart. Restart and see what happens.
Let me know.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe
