Hold the lower spray arm hub (plastic bolt spray arm connects to) and turn the lower spray arm counter clockwise to remove it.
Using a torx bit, remove the 4 screws and the top cover. Remove the screws for the lower cover and the chopper cover. Insert a flat screwdriver it into the clip of the chopper cover to pull it up easier.
Unless there are alot of "foreign objects" in that area, be prepared to replace the chopper, the motor and/or sump assembly.

Hello: I have a Kenmore Elite diswasher Model #665-16264402. It will not clean the dishes on the top rack much at all. To be honest it's not cleaning well on top or bottom! It has a built in filter,...

Hi, Colleen. Thanks for using fixya.com. I suspect the chopper may be plugged which would cause poor circulation and poor washing results. The chopper is located in the sump housing assembly and is #6 in the picture below. It is accessed by removing the lower spray arm and the filter assembly. Disassembly requires a T10 and T15 Torx screwdriver. Once disassembled, use the picture as a guide for locating the chopper and clean or replace as necessary. Part number is 8268383 and is available at www.appliancezone.com.

Dishwasher spray arms don't spin & spray water

Check that the water pumped on arms has enough pressure.
tip

Ref: Poor cleaning or noisy pump on Whirlpool or Kenmore dishwasher. April 25,...

A plugged up sump can cause a multitude of problems in a dishwasher, it can make the dishwasher not clean as well as it should, make the cycle run longer, it can create noises and redeposit food.

To clean the sump follow the directions below.

- Remove the lower rack

- Remove the lower wash arm (1) by turning the nut (4) clockwise (right) lift the arm off, there is a bearing (3) (small thin plastic washer) under the arm, be sure not to loose it. Lift the tab on the back of the feed tube cap (2) and swing it to the right and lift up, this may need a bit of pressure to release it.

- Remove the 4 screws (3) from the accumulator (1), lift off the accumulator. Remove 1 screw(7) from the cover (8) this is located down inside of the sump (4) on the left front side. Lift up and remove the cover (8), watch for glass and clean out all the debris from the sump and especially around the the area of the chopper and screen (6) which will be exposed with the cover (8) off. If the screen is blocked with debris that usually means you need a new chopper. it may be broken or loose and not doing its job.

Once clean reassemble and enjoy a dishwasher that cleans the dishes again.

Blinking clean light ...

I found a broken chopper causing my blinking clean light problem. A piece of plastic found its way to the chopper, jammed it and broke the end of the shaft off. I found the parts, blade, nut, washer, in the chopper sump area. The chopper screen was clogged, restricting water flow and setting the fault. Another symptom I had was about a month of poor dish cleaning of dishes on the top rack. I replaced the chopper for about $25.00 and everything is fine. Be aware of the replacement procedures, it can be a bear.

I read a comment on not replacing a broken chopper, that a dishwasher had worked for four years without one. I don't know if that's a good idea since chunks of food flow freely into the pump.

My dishwasher is not washing dishes on the top rack...

HI,

The top rack is not cleaning because of low water pressure from the wash motor to the upper spray arm.
Assuming the top spray arms are clear of debris, remove the lower spray arm to access the wash motor. Remove the 4 torx screws and the filter (accumulator assembly). Remove the torx screw and the inlet protector that covers the chopper assembly. Make sure the chopper is not broken (broken chopper will fill with debris and block water flow). While holding the chopper blade, reach inside the "D" shaped opening on top of the motor and spin the wheel/motor by hand in each direction to make sure either the chopper gear or the motor gear that drives the chopper is not broken. Replace the chopper if necessary . If the motor gear is broken, replace the sump and motor assembly . Remove any debris from the sump area in the process.
You don't have to shut the power off to the dishwasher because the door will be open, but if you feel more comfortable, do so.

Dishes on top rack don't get clean

The following suggestions will greatly enhance the ability of your dishwasher to clean all of the dishes thoroughly:

1. Rinse all of the food off of the dishes before you put them in the dishwasher.

2. Run the hot water into the sink until it is as hot as it gets before you start the dishwasher.

3. Do not pack the dishes into the dishwasher, just put in a reasonable number without crowding or stacking them on either shelf.

4. Pull the top shelf all the way out to be sure that the water connection at the rear of the top shelf is connected. Sometimes, this connector comes disconnected preventing the water from entering the top spray assembly.

THese things should make a huge difference.

Good luck with this and please rate my answer. Thanks. Joe

I have a kenmore 665 dishwasher where the spary arms do not spin.

  • First, check water level. Start machine, wait until the machine begins main wash. Open the door, the water level should be just below the heater element. If too low replace inlet valve.
  • If you can't hear the wash motor running or is just humming, the motor may be bad.
  • To check if the food chopper is blocked or broken;
  1. Remove lower spray arm by holding the arm and rotating the spray arm retainer.
  2. In the back of the tub, unclip or remove the screw from the upper spray arm supply tube.
  3. Rotate the lower spray arm support to the right while disconnecting the supply tube from it.
  4. Remove the four torx screws from the sump cover, remove assembly.
  5. There may be a primary filter in the left side of the sump, if so, remove the torx screw and the filter.
  6. On the right side there is the chopper assembly cover. Remove the torx screw and cover to expose the chopper.

Hope everything goes well for you,

Regards

Richard

Water not spraying hard enough

Could be a a couple different issues.. Not filling with enough water or food chopper broke or food chopper filter screen clogged.

Check water level:
Run the DW and wait for the main wash to start (water will fill. pause then complete fill) The water should be no more than 1/4 inch below the heating element. If not there..replace water inlet valve.

Inspect food chopper:
Remove lower spray arm and rear water supply tube to upper spray arm. Remove torx screws that secure the sump cover. Remove the rounded cover on the left side to expose the chopper assembly. Inspect for breakage of blockage. There may be an additional plastic screen to remove first.
