Why is my Canon Pixma 4820 suddenly leaving lighter lines through color pictures.
Canon Pixma ip4820 printer: runs perfect text and black, general color good, except now prints regular-spaced cyan color ONLY lighter colored, wide lines through color pictures. On the test pattern function it prints the black grid perfect, 7 of the 8 color bars print perfect (1-black, 1-yellow, 3-magenta, 2-cyan. **ONLY the top Cyan color bar is half normal, half lighter tone running lengthwise (really strange), and I think that is what is making the irregular pattern I am complaining about. I reset print heads twice using Canon's software tool, 2-regular nozzle cleanings, 2-deep nozzle cleanings, updated drivers off Canon website. Replaced Cyan ink cartridge. No error messages, mechanically printer runs perfect. Any suggestions?
Canon printers do not like the refilled ink cartridges. After having ruined a few printers trying to "save" money. I went back to genuine Canon ink and have never had a problem since.
hi, since you are ready to find a replacement if this doesn't work, you can try a few things by yourself. see if the the jack connecting the printhead to the ink cartridge holders is intact(it is a source of many problems in these type of printers) also. if there is too much heat emanating from the printer during use, its advisable to chuck it.

No! The large cartridge is used for text only printing. The smaller black cartridge is used for black in images such as pictures. You have a "C (cyan) M (magenta) Y (yellow) and B (black) color system. This actually saves the color inks for you. If the Black was not there, you would need to make a composite black from the color inks. Don
I believe your problem lies in the printer properties - in that at some point, the printer was told to print all colors in black & white.
Seems very frustrating but in reality, it should be just a simple fix.
Try going into printer properties:
either control panel then right-click on printer icon
or point mouse to start menu, printers and faxes, then right-click on default printer (assuming it is the correct printer), left click on properties, then left click on printer preferences, far tab likely...look for <color> and have a look at any checkmarks in boxes having to do with "print all colors in black white" or something like..." print in greyscale only"
should fix if not, go to printer mfg website and download most recent driver and any patches.
if you take this route...do not install the driver quite yet - just download it to maybe desktop for now.
First you would have to uninstall existing driver, reboot, THEN install the new driver then reboot and see what happens.
When you print photos you print in Max dpi, for this no faded lines anywhere. Probably you have a problem only in black color in print head. Мay be it's partially clogged or partially defective.
The BK5 is for black text only. The other black ink is used for shades of black/gray together with the three basic colors in printing color photos. You cannot use it to print black text.
Try printing something in a colored font, like red or green and see what happens. This printer uses two black ink cartridges. It uses the larger one for black text printing. If it is dry, blocked, or damaged, your text (usually black) will not print. Changing to a color font will rule that out.
Sounds like you need to re-align the print cartridge . The reason the text comes out ok is probably because it is only using the black cartridge for text. The color cartridge is the one that's out of alignment. You may have some sort of Cannon utility running in the task bar that will allow you to easily allign the print cartridges. If not, go to the main "Printers and Faxes" window, RIGHT-click on the printer and select "Properties". You should be able to find a button in the properties that's labeled something like re-align print cartridges. It will print out a series of test pages and ask you to select the set of lines that looks the straightest and type it in. It's a good idea to do this every time you replace a cartrige.
