Need to measure PTC resistance

I have unplugged the washing machine. The information I have found to fix my "not draining or spinning" problem (E47) say to remove the door lock assembly and measure the resistance of the PTC. My question is... must I remove the door look assembly to do this? Or, can I just use an ohm meter without removing the assembly? This thing is a bear to get in to!

No need to remove the door if you can remove the inner panel to have access to guts for measurement.

SOURCE: defroster

All you have to do now is wait a few days to see if it frosts back up. If not you're home free. Far as the thermostat, if you checked it when it was over its cut out temp it would show "open" and would seem to be defective. Unless it has an internal factory test resistor in order to properly test a defrost thermostat it should be below approx 10 degrees for at least 20 mins

Dryer won't spin belt good

Hi,

Your problem says dryer but the category says washer. I wrote this answer thinking the problem was washer. Sorry but I haven't had opportunity to fix my dryer before so can't help you there. If however your problem is the washer (or is anyone else is reading this), please read on... you should find some ideas here.

First you have to check the error code. If your washer does not have a digital display you have to do the following:

1. press any button to "wake up" the machine.
2. press and hold the start and pause buttons.
3. count the flashing lights.
a) first the five lights plus the start light will flash. Count.
b) then the start light will flash. Count.
4. error code is E +# of times in a + total # of flashes in a and b.

Example: flashes start light plus all five lights 4 times, then a pause, then start light alone 3 times. Error code is E47.

There are lots of error codes but E47 and E43 are both door problems. Check out the following document for a lengthy (but understandable) troubleshooting guide. E47 and E43 both say to do Test 9, which is test the resistance of the PTC. If it's not working then you have to replace the door latch assembly (about $80), if it reads around 1500 Ohms you have to replace the control board (about $250).
http://manuals.frigidaire.com/prodinfo_pdf/Webster/134542000.pdf

First, let me say that I have no idea how to test the PTC but it can't be hard with a standard multimeter (I will be doing this tomorrow with my Dad).

Second, the removal to access the door latch assembly is stupid easy - check out the following YouTube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prkM2XMoOJk

Third, if you have a different error code just look up the test in the manual document above.

Hope that helps!

Remove the door lockassembly and measure the resistance of the PTC. Shorted or open, defective doorlock assembly. Reads around 1500 ohms, defective Main Control Board.

Kenmore front load washer 417.44082400 a E-47 code comes up. Pump out the water but won't spin.

The E47 indicates that the Control board is sensing the door PTC circuit is open during spin. Power off the machine and then back on again after 30 minutes to clear the error display. If the error comes back again then you will need to look at the PTC circuit & door latch assembly and check for any dislodged connectors or damage to cables. If these are Ok then the PTC circuit may have to be replaced.

GLTF2940 My washer goes through all cycles but won't spin

I had the same problem with my washer. Frigidaire model GLTF2940ES1. It's a front load. Now I'm not the type to stare at it and then call the repair man, I hate spending more money on something when it already costs an arm and a leg just to buy one. So I started digging around, I pulled the thing apart and looked at this and that. It would go through the cycles just fine, except it wouldn't do the fast spin. So, while pulling panels off, I noticed an envelope taped to the inside of the washer. It was the "Washer Tech Data Sheet" and in it, it will tell you how to get the error code from your washer and then basically tell you whats wrong with it. On models with an LCD display, you push any button to "wake" your machine up,then you push START and PAUSE/CANCEL simultaneously, and after a few seconds an error code will display. Mine was E47. With E47, your board thinks the door PTC circuit is open during spin. It then says to Remove door lock assembly and measure the resistance of the PTO. This I don't know how to do, and I don't know (yet) what PTO stands for. But, this all boils down to your door lock assembly. For the "corrections" part it says to do the following...first, replace the door lock assembly, you can do this yourself, but you have to take off the top panel of the washer. Then, look down and you can see it, it has 3 wires, disconnect them and pull it out. Buy a new one, and put it in. really easy. BUT, if this doesn't fix your problem them chances are its a defective control board. And that, I don't know how to fix. (yet).

Will not spin, water will drain but motor will not move. Have replacer the motor control board. Washer will go through all other cycles fine.

what you first have to do is to recall the error code from the memory washer. The procedure is written in the user manual you received when you purchased the machine(white envelope inside the washer casing) but basically, you need to wake up the machine by pressing any button, wait for 5 long seconds, and then press the start and pause/cancel simultaneously. You hold the 2 buttons pressed together for a few seconds and then the machine will display the error code. If you see E47, you need to change the door lock module. In the manual, E47 or E48 refers to test #9 which is to measure the resistance of the PTC heater (white little piece acting as a relay) If you see something around 1500 ohms, this part really is defective. I changed it this morning and now my washer works just fine. The whole module is sold around 60$ in Montreal. Part number 131763245. The guy at the store told me this is 90% of the time the cause of the problem.

Careful with the error code: If you un-hooked a cable and started the machnie to make some test, the machine will probably store another error code in its memory. In order for the machine to show you the real problem, you need to hookup everything back and start a cycle. That will reset the previous error and store the valid one.

My washer wont spin

Frigidaire front loader model # GLTF2940ES3.

Cycle ended prior to spin segment. Checked error code history to find E47 fault. Troubleshot per manual. Found that the "PTC one-spot check" read ~1582ohms. Although the book indicates that this is sufficient and recommends (rather tells) you to replace the control board we were still skeptical seeing as this is a ONE POINT check on a device that is non-linear. We went with the lesser of two evils. Purchased and replaced a new door lock. Works again! Phew, that could have been costly.
