Jan 17, 2009 I posted this Jan 3, 2009 and seem to have a solution. Similar problem. E4 54037380 Can not record on this disc. Even though it is from the same package of DVD-Rs that I have successfully recorded to previously. Contacted them about 9 months ago without a successful resolution so I am trying again. Unit will play any DVDs, will record and play back DVD-RWs but will not record on my imation DVD-Rs 8X discs that worked fine in the past. Starts to record for a few seconds and then the error message appears (sometimes with slightly different final 4 digits of error number). Other postings have suggested: maybe a firmware update is available (I requested and we will see Emerson's response), trying slower speed discs (I am skeptical since these 8x imation discs in this same package previously worked, and the instructions say 1-16x for DVD-Rs), unplugging the unit for 1/2 hour to reset the unit (did not work), playing the last disc recorded to the end and then trying a new disc (now it recorded for about 30 seconds rather than 10 seconds but then got E4 54043E02 error message, different but still did not work). So I am hoping for something more productive out of Emerson this time. Update Jan 17,2009. Bought a CD and DVD cleaner disc with the little brushes on it. Cleaned the EWR20V5 per the cleaner instructions and tried to recod on the imation DVD-R 8X that I had used successfully in the past, no luck, same error message. So I bought another brand, maxell DVD-R 4.7GB up to 16X and IT WORKED. The instructions on pg 25 say for DVD-R "up to 16X" may be used but "4X-8X disc is recommended". Go figure, no idea why the 16X worked but they did in this case. So just a suggestion to try other brands. Someone else had suggested that also so I gave it a shot. $8 of new discs and $13 for the cleaner and I've back in business.

A DVD recorder, not connected to a computer, only can record movies.
If you have a DVD reorder connected to your PC, you need software, like NERO, to be able to write all the different codes needed to make a DVD a playable one for movie, audio or just files. (Data)
check and see if the dvd player needs to be cleaned. you can pick up contaminates from other dvd's or cd's get yourself a dvd disk cleaner and run it thru seveveral times . and try to play your money then.
For the EWR20V4, press Setup on the remote then select the Disc menu (with the left/right arrows) and press enter. Select Finalize (using the up/down arrows) and press enter. A confirmation window will pop up, select Yes (left/right arrows) and press enter. Note: finalization takes some space on the DVD so leave room after recording to the disc. The step will take a few minutes. Finalization is permanent except for -RW discs (rewritable) and can only be undone with same unit that finalized the dvd-rw.
the standard tape symbols are as follows. triangle on side pointing right - play filled dot - record these need to be pressed at the same time.
while recording II symbol is to pause square is stop. double arrows left is rewind doubble arrows right is fast forward. arrow up with a base is eject.
My Emerson won't play anything except DVD Movies, never has, wasn't suppose too. Make your movies in DVD Video format and it will read them fine (unless it's broke). I make movies all the time and play them back in mine. It reads DVD-R, DVD+R, and in duel layered. It will not read RW disks!
Man I've every problem you can imagine with DVD Players. I've found when the disk gets stuck, as long as it's not jammed. You can turn the unit off or unplug it. Plug it back in but DON'T TURN IT ON! Instead hit the eject button and the drive should open the drive without trying to read the disk.
the dvd writer needs to be replaced, the laser is faulty or miisaligned, the cost of a repair is no longer viable because a new one would cost about $60 (£32.00)
Sometimes this unit gets "confused" - not sure why -- but try first using a CD cleaning disk and let it start and stop a couple times (sometimes lens gets dirty and does this) - if that doesn't help then try unplugging unit and leave unplugged (from wall socket) for about 30min then plug in, set local time and then see if the disks play okay - sometimes this "resets system"
