''Back door open, please close back door'' - back door is closed
Hi my Brother fax machine MFC 7420 keeps saying that the back door is open when it is not - its fully closed. I've turned the fax on and off and and plugged it out but still to no avail
After clearing a paper jam with power off, the error message "Back Door Open" appeared on the LCD when powered back on. Back door is securely closed, I've repeatedly inspected for any loose bits of paper, but the problem does not go away. I've tried opening-reclosing the back door, then pulling power plug for 30 seconds -- that does not clear up the problem either. After clearing a paper jam with power off, the error message "Back Door Open" appeared on the LCD when powered back on. I have the same problem and opening, closing, and unplugging does not work. How do I force this machine to perform full self diagnostics? I have the same problem and opening, closing, and unplugging does not work. How do I force this machine to perform full self diagnostics?

short of returning it for another look to see if the lever where the cover closes is not got tape or something preventing it from seeing the door is shut.
try this remove the toner of the printer and put it back again and closed properly make sure door close and turn off the printer remove the power plug from the outlet and ppower cord from the printer and wait for some time and turn it back on.
The back door sensor is damaged. You could could try and close and re-close the door over and over until it registers, replace or bypass the sensor, or buy a new printer. Brothers printers are pretty cheap, depending on what your time is worth per/hour, I'd would just replace it rather than waste a lot of time.
The back door is a double door. Inside the gray door is a black plastic paper guide that hinges down, also. Mounted on the inside of that is a thin, black rod, leading to a lever on your right, that swings through a slot in the side of the machine. Sometimes the lever gets bent so it doesn't fit into that curved slot. If that's your situation, gently force it back into the slot so it can block the sensor that tells it the back door is closed, and you'll be printing again.
There is a sensor lever on the black guide that goes into a sensor on the right as you face the back. This guide is closed by the back door. If that lever is out of place it will always say back door open.
Actually, you need to double check the back cover and front cover, open them all to check all paper jam.
Besure to check the back cover, normally all paper jam is from the back.
be sure to close the front cover at the last cover to close.
