I have a Kenmore 70 series washer that won't spin

I have Kenmore washer model # 110.20702990 that won't agitate or spin. I have replaced the coupler based on other posts, but that did not work. I can see the motor is working based on running the washer in spin cycle and seeing the rotating wheel. It will start to slowly spin the tub, but doesn't fully engage. Thanks

Is there another name for the transmission? I was unable to locate it on the schematics....

I have the same problem...almost. If I use a small screwdriver to kick on the lid switch, then give the basket a clockwise twirl to get it started, it will catch and come up to speed. When I quickly closed the lid the spin will continue. This leads me to believe that a clutch is slipping and by my helping to get it going, it will eventually catch. But oddly, this only occurs after a couple of washes; it's only after a couple of loads will the spin refuse to spin.

Kenmore 70 series washer

Does it hum or click? If it clicks your coupler is out or a hum could be a faulted gearcase.

Kenmore Washing Machine 70 series

You most likely have a broken coupler between the motor and gearcase.
You can buy the part for about $10 or have someone come out and replace it for about $150-200.
If you will post the complete model number from the the washer so I can see which style cabinet you have, I will try to walk you through the repair. It isn't very complicated if you are handy with home repairs.
With the age of the machine it probably just needs a coupler, but it could also have a problem in the transmission or basket drive that has caused the failure.
