Good for you in training and trying to keep fit among other reasons.
I suggest visiting a local boxing gym and ask for a free trial. Most places do that. Honestly though, id pay for a few sessions and youll get all that info plus way more.
I can say do this and do that all day long. But in actuality, you should have someone show you hands on

Hi Jen,
I have probably spent hundreds of hours punching away at a punching bag in my lifetime, so I do have a couple of tips for you. My first tip is to use hand and wrist protection. Punching bags can cause you to sprain your writs and can also cause abrasions on the hands from friction burns. There are wrist wraps available online, or at a sporting goods store, than can help your wrists to avoid twisting and can help guard your hands against friction burns. I hope that helps!

Is there a different technique used to hitting a double-end punching bag?

The rhythm is completely different - other bag styles don't punch back. Training with a double end punching bag will teach you to bob and weave, slip and duck, keep your hands up and to move your head.

I am having a very difficult time getting the right punching technique. Can anyone help me learn how to properly strike my punching bag?

The best advice I can give you is to seek out a trainer or perhaps buy an instructional DVD. I found you a great one for under $10. It teaches people proper techniques for punching and how not to get hurt.

I just bought and installed my first punching bag at home. I thought it would be good for releasing stress. Where do I begin? Is there a proper technique to using a punching bag?

The best advice I can give you is to take your time. It is very important to take some time to first develop proper body mechanics of punching before hitting away. Remember to stay focused on your balance, keep your wrists straight, protect your hands, and never push the punching bag.

I just bought my first punching bag. It is one that you fill yourself. What should I fill it with?

Punching bags are traditionally filled with sand, water or grains; however you can use around the house items if you prefer. Some materials that can be a good substitute are rolled up garbage bags (packed tightly), ripped clothes/sheets/rags, cotton, rice, or a combination of these items. What you fill your bag with depends on how heavy and hard you want your punching bag to be.

How do I properly punch a punching bag? Is there a technique to it or I do I just start punching away?

Before you go "punching away" make sure to wear the right protective gear (gloves, wrist wraps) to insure you do not get injured. To begin using a punching bag, aim for the middle of the bag (generally a softer area) and hit for three minutes. Then rest for a few minutes. Repeat this on and off procedure until you feel that a good amount of stress has left your body. At this point it would be a good idea to take a few deep breathes and drink some water.
