Welcome to the club mate :) Throw it out and stop buying new cartridges before you pay double the price of the printer in cartridges... This is a known problem, without any fix. Should I congratulate you on buying a nice disposable printer?

I understand your Photosmart 6510 is printing more of a gray then a black ink, I'd like to help. Please begin with the steps in the following document; Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP Deskjet Ink Advantage an...
If you complete, or have already completed all of the steps in the document above and the issue continues, my own personal recommendation, not one of HPs, is to use the solution offered in the following video. I only suggest doing this if the printer is out of warranty; How to fix a HP Printer, not printing black ink and missing colours

I tried most of the suggestions in this thread, but stopped short of disassembling the print head. Nothing worked until I saw the video referenced in Sunshyn2005's message. That did work, but not on my first try. For the second attempt, I left the wet paper towels in place for a couple of hours to really soak the print heads. That did the trick.
So, thank you Sunshyn2005, for pointing me to the solution. -Source
Although the printer might be out of warranty, if the issue persists, HP may be able to offer you something. Maybe they can offer you a discount on an alternate model. If you are in Canada or US call 800 474 6836, or you can Contact HP Worldwide.
If this resolves the issue, please let me know so we can help others who may be experiencing the same issue.
Inkjet printers require both ink cartridges to be full and not expired before the printer will fully initialize. Even if you are only printing black in both carts do not complete the power up sequence the printer will never go online to print.
It is a known defect among many PhotoSmart printers, including the 6510. The black ink was programmed to fail at between 50 to 60 black print cartridges. One HP whistleblower said a bug in this programmed failure causes the black ink to suddenly stop printing after 5 to 6 black ink changes instead. When you call in, they offer to sell you a new printer! The service guy I spoke with was extremely nervous. I refused to buy a new printer, given I had put less than a ream of paper through mine. I was on hold for about 10 minutes, then told there was no supervisor, but given an email address to write to. Three weeks later, still no response. Yes, a class action lawsuit needs to happen, not just for the printer malfunction, but for the hours I soent trying to fix it, and new cartridges I bought, thinking I had bad ones.
The black ink cartridge is larger than the photo black cartridge and black is used in photos to make the darker colors. Black text takes much less ink per page.
Well if you already installed a new black ink cartridge and still wont print, then try cleaning your printer head. It can be that the some ink was hardened and got stuck preventing you to print a black color.
HP Inkjet printers work only if both the cartridges have ink unlike HP Laserjet printers.
If you want the printer to print only in black, Follow the steps
Start --->Control panel -- >Printers and faxes ---->Right click on the printer icon (HP c5100) select printing preferences.
Under printing prefences there u will see an option to print with black or print in gray scale.
Note:HP Inkjet printers like Photosmart C5180 will work only both the cartridges have ink.
