The transformer is a Lionel ZW
I have used 18ga lamp wire but you can use wire as thin as telephone wire. My rule of thumb is to use thicker wire (lower gauge number) the more motors on the train you are running. 20 or 22ga is generally used by most.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The Fahnstock clips as used on the old CTC Lockon was good for 16-20 AWG preferably solid wire If you use stranded wire, twist it tightly before inserting into the clips. If it is the Old LTC light up lockon, use the same

Is the tranformer power adequate for the train and is it a working tranformer?
Will the train run by connecting the wires directly to the two points of the train (wheels and center rail connector)?
Are the tracks new?
