If its a laptop and it came with vista, its most likely XP isnt compatible witht the hardware do to that it was designed for VISTA.

Try going to the laptop companies website and searching for drivers for it that are XP instead of vista and install them.

You bassically downgraded the machine so XP doesnt know how to use your hardware till you install XP drivers for it.

Good Luck

My acer netbook is stuck on mute

if the little x over the volume bar is still stuck after moving it up you may have to hit the function key (fn) on your laptop and hit one of the F1-F12 KEYS that look like a mute or volume symbol also there should be a mute button on the laptop itself. if all that fails. go to (xp) right click on my computer -device manager-and see if you have a red or yellow x over your sound sound devices (win vista or 7) go to computer, sys prop on the top then device manager. if you see any of htose yellow or red warnings you will need to re-download the audio drivers from acer website Let me know if this helped.

I pressed the volume control buttons @ top of my keyboard, specifically the volume 'off' button; how do I regain my volume control?

Hi,

Kindly let us know more details like the operating system of the computer (Windows XP,Vista) and also the model number of the keyboard.

Generally, the Volume Off or Mute feature can be deactivated by pressing the same button, i.e; the Volume Off button.

Alternately, you can Unmute the volume by clicking the Speaker (volume) icon in the taskbar (lower-right corner of the desktop.) and unchecking the box next to Mute. (See attached image)

control panel> classic view> sound> You have a TAB now called recording>If a microphone listed there click on it > Properties button at bottom of screen > New box opens with various tabs> Levels Tab> Microphone volume and mute there > Make sure its full volume and not muted - the image at the end of the volume control - click onit to mute / unmute

Thinkpad R51 Audio Driver

I had this exact same problem. Try this:

Above the keyboard are three hard keys for volume (down, up, and mute). The mute button only mutes, it does NOT unmute. To unmute, push the volume up button a few times. Now try your sounds again.

I was very confused because the hard mute key does not affect the GUI at all (you don't see the little speaker with the red x in the notification area). Hope this helps!

I want unmute my laptop which has the mute button on all the time

Try looking for the the speaker in the lower-right corner. Single-left-click on it, and unselect "Mute". It might either be a speaker with a no-sign or the word "mute" with a checkmark next to it.

HP Pavilion Entertainment PC

I was having a similar issue. My volume button worked fine muting and unmuting the volume, the light just stayed red either way.

I went into Device Manager, then expanded the Sound, Video and Game Controller options, I rolled back the driver and it was an instant fix for me :)
