I have a pb-460 3/4 polaris pump. I can't get the impeller to come off. I had the shaft secured and turn the impeller counter clockwise and it just spins and won't unscrew and come off. Am I m

Sta-Rite pump. Possibly deluxe version? If so, has a securing screw in impeller. This has backwards threads! Remove first, then secure shaft from spinning, use a flat blade screw driver, or 7/16" open end wrench. See pics below, remove back end cover from motor, to expose.

To remove the impeller you will twist the impeller off in a counter clockwise motion. However, the impeller cannot be freed from the motor shaft without first securing the motor shaft.

Counter clockwise. Just make sure there is not a securing screw in the middle of the impeller. some do have this feature. If you do have a set screw in the middle, this is a REVERSE thread screw. Meaning, turn clockwise to loosen. Most do not have this however.

At the end you loosened the motor thru-bolts you should have a cap covering the motor shaft end. Remove it to find the end of the shaft. Depending on the motor brand and age you should have either a flatted surface for a wrench or a slot for a screwdriver to secure the shaft from turning. Turn the impeller off counter-clockwise. Some impellers are so stuck you can not free them holding the shaft end this way. Disassemble the rotor from the pump motor and lock the whole works in a vise to then get a better grip on the impeller. Impellers are often cracked from seal failure so do not be surprised if your impeller breaks up before coming off the shaft.

Disconnect all power. Remove the six bolts holding the seal plate to the wet end. Remove the two small allen screws to remove the diffuser. Remove the dust cap from the end of the motor and secure the shaft from moving. If installed, remove the Phillips head screw in the center of the impeller by turning clockwise (left hand threads). You can now remove the impeller by turning counter clockwise, note that you may need an impeller wrench to remove it and a specific tool to hold the shaft while you remove the impeller. Once the impeller is off you can remove the four bolts that hold the motor to the seal plate. This process just needs to be reversed to re-install but you will need a new shaft seal (PS-1000).

On the back end of the motor is a small cap that can be removed to expose the end of the shaft. Once removed you will see a slot to place a screwdriver in. Hold the shaft from turning and turn the impeller off counter-clockwise. In extreme cases you will need to disassemble the motor and place the rotor in a vice to adequately hold it from turning as you break the impeller free. Lock the end of the shaft opposite the pump and then turn of the impeller counter clockwise looking at the pump. The remainder is simple nuts and bolts.

It is either the capacitor on the back of the motor or the windings of the motor. Motor capacitors.

I have a similar problem. The guy at the pool supply sold me a cup/spring assembly that seals between the impeller and the rear bracket. He says it is fairly straightforward to replace, but you must secure the drive shaft from turning buy popping off the rear cover on the motor (small round cover) and hold the shaft with something like pliers. I am first going to try to hold it in front of the motor at the bracket area. This needs to be held still to unscrew the impeller from the shaft. I am going to work on it today. We'll see how it goes. $12.50 part vs. $150 service call....
