Calculator screen stratified black lines

I haven't used my TI 86 in awhile. When I turned it on, the screen has these stratified black lines. Inbetween the lines I can kind of see the cursor, but if I punch in number they're are totally obscured by the black background. I've alreay bought new batteries for it. I know how to lessen and darken the background on the calculator and that is not it. Maybe I dropped it? Is there anyway it can be fixed besides trying to hit the dang thing again ;)

I've had a similar problem in the past. With mine though it was white lines. It still happens sometimes when I don't use it for a while. To fix it, all I did was set the screen to its darkest setting and left it on for 10 minutes (keep it from turning itself off, by pushing buttons ever few minutes.) It works great, and the calculator is fine unless you leave it unused for a month or so. A similar solution may work for you.

How do I reset my TI-86 after a long period of no use.

Every time you change batteries this will happen to you. First press 2nd then press and hold the down arrow. Hold until their is no black in the background but you can still see the numbers on the screen.

Ti-86 calculator screen is black how do i turn it back to normal

Turn the calculator on. Press and release the 2nd key. Press and hold the down-arrow key for a couple of seconds until the screen lightens. If you go too far, repeat the process with the 2nd and up-arrow keys.

Hi. I changed the batteries on my TI-86 and when I tried to turn it back on the screen was completely black. Do you know what the issue could be?

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

If the screen is completely black, go the other way, using the Down-arrow instead of the Up-arrow.

If this doesn't do it, please reply to this post and we'll go on from there.

Turned on ti 86 and have a black screen. I have replaced all of the batteries and still is black.

Whenever the screen is full and a line with calculation result comes up at the bottom of the screen, the screen all of a sudden shows things in a weird way and can't be read. By press "2nd+mode"(=quit), or try reset button (a small hole which a pin can only be used to press it to RESET. Gud Luck

Adjust the contrast. Turn the calculator on. Press and release the 2nd key. Press and hold the down-arrow key until the screen lightens. If you go too far, repeat the process using the up-arrow key instead of the down-arrow.

Blank lines across the screen of a TI-86 graphing calculator

Try this, hook up new battery and go to MODE and darken and lighten the screen.. do it ten to fifteen times. if that doesn't help, try hook up most left and most right's battery terminal to a DC supply at 4.5V. dont go above 4.5 it will fry your calc (it is design to handle 3V). now you are forcing extra juice into the dead LCD screen lines... and reapeat the MODE + darken trick. I fixed mine like that! Works! and remeber to leave it completely black(darkest) for a while to keep that dead line alive!

Ti 86

Hi I got a problem with Ti-86 which is a line of the screen pixel missing. I tried to increase and decrease the intensity of the screen (2nd and up, down). Also tried to go to MODE function. I have tried those for several times. It works great. The line of those missing screen pixel came back. I don't know why. Just try it.
