I had the same problem; it happened with the first copy I tried to make directly from the printer's console - but only with the Black ink function - with the same original on the flatbed glass I then tried the Color function and it worked fine. But when I tried the Black copy function, the strong vertical lines appeared again - about 7, evenly spaced across the page and running the entire length of the page.
Nothing about cleaning any part made sense: the printer was brand new, out of the box, the color ink function worked fine to copy; so did making scan copies. It was only the black ink mode in the copy function with the original on the flatbed glass that produced the vertical lines.
What cleared it up was shutting it down, removing and re-inserting the power cord the other way, i.e., turning it around (which might have nothing to do with the outcome) and Voila! - no vertical lines with the black ink copy function - Go figure...
HP Officejet Pro 8600 Vertical Lines Print
Problem...................
When using the onboard printer console for printing a copy
of a document either by trying to print from the auto doc or the glass I got a
copy so full of vertical lines the copy was useless.
In trying to resolve problems with my Officejet Pro 8600
printing, even spending hours on the phone with HP support I had to figure all
this out on my own (with the help from a dear and close friend). Below is a
copy and paste of my post to HP forum and their immediate reactions:
Good luck people if you have this printer. Be advised
"HP's outsourced tech support" is ridiculous! They do not know what
the problem is concerning vertical lines on a copy done from the printers
console from scanner glass or from auto doc feeder or they are playing another
role.
HP Support does offer to replace your printer. This was the
2nd printer for me in a 12 day period. The 1st one was replaced at the point of
purchase. This is not the retailer's problem but instead an HP problem and
seems obvious to me that this is how the outsourced support is trying to
justify to someone higher up that they are so needed.

I would look at the scanner. It is not involved in the printer process but is in the copy process. Clean the glass with a glass cleaner and soft cloth. Remove the glass and also clean the lamp assembly. If either part has a dark mark on it it would leave a line on the copy. If this does not solve your problem and the unit is several years old I would replace the lamp. Let me know if you need more assistance.

Dirt.
Open the ADF, the top of the scanner/copier.
The ADF glass is the thin strip of glass on the left. Damp cloth with windex or any glass cleaner. Scrub the strip of glass.

Have you tried cleaning the document feeders Scan Glass? (small glass under doc feeder ~ 1" by 9") Most times there is dirt spot on this glass, causing a shadow on scans and copies.
Try copying from the large glass by lifting doc feeder / platen cover and manually placing original. If no line copying or scanning manually from large glass, then small scan glass is deffenitely the culprit. Hope this helps.
SOURCE: Black vertical lines on faxes sent using auto document feeder
If you lift up the lid on your scanning device you will notice a glass strip about 1 inch thick and then the large area of glass used for flatbed scanning. The 1 inch strip is used for ADF scanning. Because your papper is moving across the glass strip, any dot, smudge or scratch will affect your scanning and cause verticial lines down the page. Sometimes the dot is not visible to the eye. Get some glass cleaner that has alcohol in it and thoroughly clean the glass strip and it should solve your problem. If it turns out to be a scratch on the glass then cleaning won't help.
