The cheapest and most comfortable thing for your dog isprobably a large cardboard box with holes in it. Make sure there are ample holes so that itgets enough air. I would also weight thebox down with something heavy so that the dog can't scoot it across the floor.

Crates work when they are used properly. Dogs will naturally want to move away from their space to relieve themselves. Most often, a puppy who has a crate accident simply could not wait any longer. Dogs will misbehave at times, and it is a matter of how and when you catch them or react that matters most.

How do I determine the size of crate I should buy for my dog?

The crate should be large enough for your pet to lie down comfortably and also turn around with ease. If you are buying a crate for a puppy, try to buy one for the size he/she will grow to fit, rather than the size they are now.

Is using a dog crate cruel?

Dogs in the wild need a safe haven and they usually seek out a place where they can call their own. If a domestic dog has no particular place to hide it will usually go under a table or stairs to shelter itself. So no using a dog crate is not cruel and it is a great way to house train your pet.
