Washing machine won't agitate.

Maytag toploader won't agitate. i can't figure out what makes it agitate ? the belt is loose and smokes and builds heat when running. it spins ok and dumps water ok even though that belt is in poor shape. what makes the agitator go side to side? is it the water from the pump? is it possible with loose belt the pumps not creating enough pressure to move the agitator? i am a guru myself, but not on washing machines.

Depending on type of washer, typical top load Maytag, motor turns in opposite direction for wash and spin. Your problem will no doubt be the transmission.

Maytag centennial washer topload does not wash or rinse but spins. Any possible solution?

hi,

first check the belts look under the machine maytags used to have two belts. if theyre slipping then your going to have to figure out how to re tension them. hopefully its the agitator cams. your going to have to study how your agitator comes apart, inside the agitator are a set of one way cams, usually the cap comes off and the cams are down inside. if the agitator does nothing at all with the belts are present then transmission or computer or timer failure. Maytag A512. Screeching noise smokes. Belts replaced, water pumps fine, spins. It does not agitate but the agitator is fine. Not stripped. What other problems? Transmission? parts to fix it?

The agitator shaft, not the agitator, is corroded and does not move freely.Smoke is the overheated belts, you need a transmission overhaul, boot seal and tub bearing as well as replacing the agitator shaft, again, NOT the agitator.

How to repair a loose drum?

You need to remove the agitator, loosen the tub nut (May already be loose), align bowl & tighten tub nut.

The howling (squealing) noise is likely the belt, if I had to make an educated guess. Of all the fixes you could be stuck with, that's one of the easier ones.

The reason I suggest that is because even though it probably isn't washing to its fullest potential either, you wouldn't really notice it, if it's still able to do a little agitation. Once the spin cycle kicks on, the motor applies a lot of power, and if the belt is loose, it'll spin that belt around the wheel, creating a really soothing and serene squealing noise, causing average humans to start seeking sharp objects with which to slice their wrists.

Older topload maytag won't agitate , smells like burning belt

Best to look at replacing belt, but first check to make sure nothing is seized, drum spins freely etc.

Maytag Top Load washer will spin but won't agitate

sounds like the coupler between the transmission and tub is broken or slipping

Maytag top load performa, put clothes in , fill up and now the agitator is noisey, looked under washer belt appears to be loose 2-3 inches in play, should I replace belt,or something else to repair noise...

thats normal tension on the belt if the agitator is making noise the cams within the agitator are worn (loud clicking or popping noise during wash) the agitator will need to be replaced
