Inserting any DVD it takes a long time to read and eventually the disk get ejected with the message "Unknown disk" - check disk again
Purchase a DVD cleaning kit and follow the instructions, this will remove any dirt from the laser pickup lens, and hopefully get it up and running. If this fails, the only other option is have the whole laser assembly replaced, "expensive" or replace the entire unit.

The DVD needs to initialise the disk first. Come out of the HDD dubbing menu and press DVD on the remote. The blank recordable disk should be recognised and you should see Initialise disk? on the screen. Press Start and hey presto, you can now dub from the HDD Movie dubbing menu (as per the manual instructions).

I would start with a DVD cleaner kit for the player. Chances are, if the drive worked before, then it will again; after being cleaned.
If the issue persists, then the DVD drive is failing. Chances are at that point, it would be cheaper to replace the entire unit then just the DVD drive.

Like quite a few others who reported this problem, my machine plays CDs, but not DVDs.
I can only agree with the sentiment that this product is a load of c***.
Tomorrow it goes to an authorized workshop. Will let you know what the outcome. is.
The answer was short and sweet - the laser assembly needs to be replaced. I was given a price and said "No, thank you!"
