On all of my old tvs (not HD), i have been able to automatically enable closed captions when tv was muted. i cannot seem to figure out how to do that on my new vizio. Does this tv not do that at all? am i missing something? my tv did NOT come with a remote in it, so maybe it is some function on vizio remote?

With the television on and in tv mode, press the CC button on the remote. It's the button with a square on it. That should get you into the closed captioning menu.
You could also go into the main setup menu and find it there. For more information, here's a link to your user manual for the Vizio L32.

If you are using a HD cable box then this would be setup in the cable box itself.
Example:
With a Motorola Cable box, you would turn it off and press the menu button (with the receiver off and TV on). This will bring up a menu that will allow you to adjust your digital closed caption settings.
If you do not have a Motorola cable box that I would refer to the manual or call the cable company.

Do you have a cable box hooked up to the unit? On the tv it is quite easy. The directions are located on .48of the manual. Here is an exert it from it is located here:

i can't turn off the closed caption on my VIZIO 47" when watching in HD !! help!
1* Use the CAPTION button repeatedly to select Caption Off, EZ Mute, or On.
* EZ Mute shows the selected captions option (if available on program) when the TV sound is muted.
2* Press the ENTER button to save.
Caption Tips
* Not all TV broadcasts include closed caption signals.
* Sometimes TV stations broadcast four different caption signals
on the same channel. By selecting CC 1 to CC 2, you
can choose which signal you view. CC 1 is usually the signal
with the captions, while Another mode might show demonstration
or programming information.
* Your TV might not receive caption signals normally in the following
situations.

the option to obtain closed captioning when you press the key labeled mute on your Remote Control.
