"howling" noise during spin cycle (still there after changing burned off belt)

I have a 2.5 yr old Maytag SAV5701AWW wash machine that recently started to make a loud howling noise during the spin cycle. The belt burned off recently (on the motor pulley was where the burning occurred) during a spin cycle. I replaced the belt and also spun the drum and agitator to see if something was 'locked up'. Both seemed to move freely. After changing the belt, the machine still makes a loud howling noise on spin cycle (can not hear a person talk 5 feet from you!!!). Some other observations: the drum seems to stop abruptly when the spin cycle stops, the drum/motor/pump assembly move back and forth a great deal when the spin cycle begins.... Any thoughts? Thanks!!!

The drum of my warhing machine seems to be loose it makes alot of noise when it goes into full spin and the belt keeps coming off

  • Anonymous Mar 26, 2014

There was a noise inside the drum at certain times in the spin cycle that proceeded the latest problem

  • Anonymous Mar 26, 2014

I recently replaced the belt and the belt is not the problem. The smoke has a burning rubber smell to it. Trying to determine if this would be a bearing or the drum seal. There is no excess noise when spinning, so speculating this is the drum seal. Is this most likely?

Travioso, there was two service flashes out on this model concerning the seal and bearing which means they had an issue with this washer. The howling noise you are hearing is the bearing and will need the new designed triple seal and bearing kit. This should be covered under your warranty, I believe it is 5 years. The numbers for the service flashes are TDL-0048A-B. Call Maytag and inquire about these service flashes, these should be covered. Catriver.

The howling (squealing) noise is likely the belt, if I had to make an educated guess. Of all the fixes you could be stuck with, that's one of the easier ones.

The reason I suggest that is because even though it probably isn't washing to its fullest potential either, you wouldn't really notice it, if it's still able to do a little agitation. Once the spin cycle kicks on, the motor applies a lot of power, and if the belt is loose, it'll spin that belt around the wheel, creating a really soothing and serene squealing noise, causing average humans to start seeking sharp objects with which to slice their wrists.

Maytag Performa PAV2300AWW screaching noise, belt problem, pulley broke

My Maytag Performa was making the loud squealing noise. I changed out the water pump/bearing, took care of the problem.
Putting a new belt on just help burn up the bearing (they needed replacing) and probably ruined the new belt. Probably seized the water pump bearing and the belt jumped and broke the motor pully. A washing machine motor is very strong, when that h20 pump bearing seized (or possibly some bearings jamed up) the motor kept on turning that belt and the plastic pully gave in. You'll need to replace that also. If the h20 pumb bearing is turning freely, likely the bearings jammed up but or now loose. That bearing should be tight, no slack or play in it. You can probably wobble the pully on it all around while turning it. The slightest slack is too much.

Loud squeal during wash and spin cycles, maytag atlantis washer

Squealing normal occurs due to belt slippage. I would check your belts (look for cracks. Check the belt tension as well, most washers have an adjustment, normally on the motor that allows you to increase the tension of the belt.

If part of a belt gets torn and it is long enough, it will hit any part of the washing machine within range and make a clicking noise at every revolution of the motor.

I am pretty sure you need new belts. You should be able to remove a few screws and open the back cover. Between the pulleys there is a tensioner...loosen that so you can remove the belt easily. replace it with a new belt and adjust the tension.

hope this helps

Could be a loose belt, or drum bearings,or ( drum rollers if your model is so equiped) In my mind machine would be worth repair when needed.
