We changed the spark plug, checked oil and gas. It is a 6.5 self propelled recycler mower. Any ideas?
This is a very common problem with these toro mowers. the needle valve in the bowl of the carb. is plugged up with dirt or varnish from the fuel. just under the primer bulb there is the carb bowl. it has a nut under it that holds it on remove the bowl and make sure fuel flows constantly while the bowl is off. push up on the float to stop the gas flow. this could be messy and dangerous. careful with the gas. its flammable. best solution is to remove the carb and soak it overnight in a parts cleaner like gunk. caution small parts inside. this happins every year on mine no matter what i do. seems like the orifice is so small it clogs easily. good luck

I just did this and it worked perfectly on my Model 20073/A/20027/A (not sure which it is...not electric start). I don't know much about gas, but after 3 years of sitting idle it had congealed into a messy glob. The entire bowl was caked. I used an old plastic butter container to both catch the first squirt of gas and conveniently jam under the plunger to stop the gas flow so I could free my hands. This was vital. To clean out the holes in the nut I used compressed air. worked great. Reassembly tips... 1) do not unjam the plunger yet... 2) put the nut into the bowl FIRST. 3) now inspect the orientation of the bowl to the plunger...it fits a certain way and if you don't figure it out ahead of time, gas will flow while you're frantically turning the bowl trying to get it to fit 4) put paper towels under plunger area before the big moment 5) it's time...QUICKLY remove the butter cup (or whatever) and put the screw/cap combo into place and rapidly screw into place. The gas will flow throughout this process, but it will stop once it is fully seated. 6) tighten nut. For what it's worth, the mower started on the first pull all thanks to Nobaddog's suggestion. 7) you could save yourself a lot of drama by emptying the gas from the mower which is not what i did.
THANK YOU! This did the trick and saved me a ton of money. I let the needle valve soak in some De-Solve-It for a minute and stuck a spray bottle tube in the top and forced it through the holes by pumping the sprayer. Put everything together and it fired right up.

I have a Toro Mower that I think this is its fourth season. It died on my wife several weeks ago and I couldn't restart. Started the next day and I finished our small yard. Next week I mowed front yard, killed it and went to the back. Wouldn't restart. Restarted next day then died after two passes and now won't do anything. Plug looked questionable so replaced it but nothing. Doesn't fire or try to run.
There is a green ground wire coming off the coil, I found the other end loose down below the flywheel. Can this be grounded anywhere on the motor or do I have to remove the flywheel and figure out where it is supposed to be attached??? Could this be why mine isn't starting???

I have an older (mid-70's) Toro (Model 20586) and it was doing the exact same thing. That fix about the bolt/jet in the bottom of the carburetor bowl worked for me. Saved me the $419 I was contemplating for a new Toro.
Not enough info - did it quit suddenly ? was the mower tipped so that the air filter is now plugged ? need some background
All it needed was to clean the orifices of the plug as suggested in the first entry. Just the bit of wire in a twist tie. :-)

turn it over and check the drive belt. it's probably too loose or broken. don't ask me how to fix it, i'm here trying to find out why mine keeps dying.

Are these regular bolt on wheels? Have you changed the nut?
I would expectc to find a "Stover" nut on such an appllication. Stover nuts are similar to "NY-Lock" but without the nylon lock. Rather, Stover (and you have to ask for them at the hardware or auto parts place), are not round and/or have had a certain side portion punched to make the nut hard to put on. Some well meaning back yard mechanics (read me) have 'fixed' the Stover by running a tap through them maning them easier to get onto the threads ... but alas, it didnt stay. That was how I learned about Stover.

just quit suddenly. It tries to start and run for just a second and then acts like no fuel or an auto shut off. When you try to pull start it right after that you get nothing. Wait about a minute and it will do the same thing again.
ran it out of gas, when i added new gas and tried to start, it started and runs for like 1 or 2 seconds and quits. Hit the primer bulb and it does the same thing over and over again.
I have a Toro two cycle lawn mower. It has set for a year or so. I got it started using an engine starting spray. At first I had to keep chokeing it, then it continued to run but speeds up, then slows, then up then slows. It does this at all speed settings. What is up with this?
I have a personal pace Toro that has had several problems starting and running. First was simply the gas cap being to tight. Then it had gotten to the point that at would'nt start or run at all so i rebuilt the carb and now i cant get gas to the carb. But if i take the bowel off the gas runs out just fine. Any ideas?
Just cleaned the needle valve as suggested and it worked. thanks for the advice, ive been trying to get mine started for a few days now, didn't store it properly, now I know. thanks again for the help.
someone put mix gas in it ran ok wont start now
