I am a HS teacher and one of my students has a TI-83 plus which does the following:
When you turn it on, it lands on a screen that says "TI-83 Plus Silver Edition 1.14" and underneath "RAM cleared". Then the calculator turns itself off
She changed the regular batteries last night. It was fine two days ago, problem began yesterday. PLease advise.

The Texas Instruments TI-83 is a graphing calculator. It's aimed towards math and science students and lets them graph and compare functions, perform data plotting and perform analysis. It has an updateable memory for adding software applications. The device comes pre-loaded with applications too. An optional connectivity kit allows you to hook the device up to your computer, and there are also optional slide cases to protect it.
Turn on the TI-83. Press the On button.
Step 2Adjust the display contrast. Press and release the key marked "2nd" and then press and hold the arrow buttons, which are below and above the yellow half-shaded circle.
Step 3Go to the Home Screen. You can do this from anywhere. Just press the button marked 2nd and then Quit.
Step 4Perform a sample calculation to get the hang of how to use the device: Model flipping a coin 10 times. Track how many of those coin flips end up in a heads result and you want to do this simulation ten times. Press Math and the left arrow which will bring up the MATH PRB menu.
Use the TIconnect software to connect the calculator to a computer. Run the TIconnect software.
In the TIconnect main window click the button "TI Device Info". This will retieve the device info from the calculator. If this operation is successful, click the button "Udpdates." Then unselect all options in the subsequent popup window to leave only The OS
Hello, Well, if screen shows the RAM CLEARED message, that means your calculator is working. Just press the [CLEAR] key, message will be erased and you are ready to crunch numbers.
You say you changed the batteries. Did you also change the back up battery? It's located in a little door with a screw right above the AAA batteries.
My students have come to me many times and have said that their calculator will not turn on. Most times it is that the contrast on the screen has been turned down and the calculator is turning on but the screen is too dim to see that it's on.
To check your contrast, turn the calculator on, press the 2nd key and the up arrow. This is how you darken the screen. You lighten the screen the same way but you use the down arrow instead.
These instructions are from education.ti.org, and worked for me.
1) Take out one of the AAA batteries
2) Hold down the CLEAR button
3) Put the AAA battery back in while still holding down the CLEAR button
4) Let go of the CLEAR button and turn the calculator ON
5) Press CLEAR to get rid of the error message.
Then you should be good! All the applications on my calculator were still intact, so despite the error message, the RAM was never actually cleared.
You can try to put fresh Back-Up batteries into the calculator. If not, you can always call the customer support at Texas Instruments to see if you can get a replacement part for your calculator. This may resolve the problem you are currently having. Hope this helps.
same thing happens w/ mine idk wat 2 do.
i cant find the hole on the back?
Get ram cleared error. Turns off soon after turing on. Relplaced all battries. There is no tiny reset hole on the back.
