I am working on my 82 xj 750 maxim...... i have done a top end rebuild but want to make sure before i start it up that the enging turns counter clock wise because turning it clockwise.....it wont turn the cams....it slips...... please help i dont want to ruin my bike

Looking from the left side, the crank spins counter clockwise.
I'm intrigued how you would turn it backwards, if you touch the starter or kick start, it is going to go the correct way. If the tensioner is working it shouldnt slip anyway

Check the 'kill' switch.
Check the starter motor/brushes.
Check the solenoid switch.
Is your bike's fuse box the old one, if so it time to replace..its done its job the bike is now 24 yrs!
