Tip & How-To about Refrigerators

Refrigerator or Freezer not Cooling or Getting Cold

If you have a refrigerator or a freezer that is not working like it once did then you are looking to get it working again. The reasons why he unit may not be working properly can be many. One of the reasons may be that the refrigeration unit that is the cooling power of the unit is slowly leaking refrigerant.

If the refrigeration unit is leaking very slowly the loss of charge may be so subtle that you will not notice it till the unit basically stops cooling completely. Then all of a sudden you realize that you have a problem. If this is your problem, you will notice that the compressor is running, the circulating fan(s) will be running, and the condenser fan is running. Everything appears to be perfectly normal, but you are not getting the cooling from the unit that you need.

If you have this situation then there is often not that much that you can do. To recharge the unit you will need to find a technician that is certified to handle refrigerants. The system which is charged and sealed at the factory will have to be tapped and the proper refrigerant added to the unit. Even then you still have a system that is leaking and the fix will only be temporary. Sometimes the leak point will be obvious, other times the leak may be very difficult to find. Most of the time, the leak will be next to impossible to find and repair.

Bottom line here is that you will have to make some hard decisions about the repair of a leaking refrigerator or freezer. If you get refrigerant added to your unit it will be a temporary fix. If you can find the leak and it is repairable, you will have a bill for that repair also. That bill may be more then the unit is worth if it is a basic model or an older model. In many cases the purchase of a new unit may be the best option.

refrigerator/freezer won't stay cold.

With the defrost timer being replaced already it sounds as if the repairman is not looking at the real problem. Unit works for 2 days then things start thawing. Hint Hint... it is not defrosting. There is a heating element inside the freezer section attached underneath the internal tubing that melts the ice every 6 to 8 hours via the defrost timer depending on the defrost timer installed. To prove that it is not defrosting..... just unplug the unit and place a stand fan blowing into the freezer for about 90 minutes. I would bet that once you plug it back in it wil work for 2 days and the problem once again repeats. With 2 calls on the same unit and you still have the same problem I would be calling the service people back and demand they fully troubleshoot the defrosting element and thermostat. Personally this is an unstatisfactory performance of an in home service by a repairman. With the exception of a new part if required, they should wave any labor and service call fees.

Refrigerator side is not cooling

You have a defrost drain blocked and a possible defrost problem with your refrigerator. Need you to get me the model number as shown in the photo locations below. Sears has a complete model number system that is confusing I know. Sears made it that way. Not sure why but look around the cold food door while open and look near bottom on the frame just above the kick plate. The number looks like this, (model No. 253.64802400 for example) I will need that number to help you solve the sound alert coming from your refrigerator. Find that number and we can go from there, Thanks, Sea Breeze
