Photoshop CS3 Freeze Fix

This article is a how-to on how to fix an Adobe Photoshop freeze at start-up. It involves resetting or deleting the Photoshop preferences file.

To re-create the preferences files for Photoshop, start the application while holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS). Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"

This is a quick and easy fix that Adobe claims will sometimes fix erratic or strange behavior such as freezes. Until next time, happy Photoshoping!

Got CS2 running on PC under WinXP, and have been using quite happily for over 3 years. Recently the menu option File | Open Recent... shows an unchanging list of files, irrespective of which files I have been working on in the preceding session(s). Also, when I select File | Open, it defaults to the particular path of the most recent file in the Recent Files list, rather than My Documents as it always used to. I've got the same problem in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, so guess it's a CS2-wide system problem. I've tried re-setting the history in Photoshop using the General Preferences to reduce the history states to 1 and the number of recent files to 0, but whenever I re-open the program it returns to the previous state. Any ideas anyone?

Save your work and close Illustrator. Double click on My Computer on your desktop and open C:>Documents and Settings > User >Application Data > Adobe > Adobe Illustrator CS2 Settings. (Your version of Illustrator will be in the foldr name.) Inside this folder is a file called AIPrefs. Drag this file to the trash, and restart Illustrator. Reset any custom preferences you want, and when you close Illustrator the preferences file will be regenerated.

You can also reset Illustrator's preferences by holding down Shift + Control + Alt while launching the program. If you get a dialog asking if you want to delete the Adobe Illustrator settings folder, click yes to proceed. Restart Illustrator. Reset any custom preferences you want, and when you close Illustrator the preferences file will be regenerated.

Delete or rename the Photoshop preferences file. This file is typically found on your hard drive at:

Users/ [user profile]/ Library/ Preferences/ Adobe Photoshop CS2 Settings/Adobe Photoshop CS2 Prefs.psp

(if you are using a different version, e.g. CS3, change the path appropriately).

Starts to open, then fails and closes

You need to delete the PS Preferences file (Adobe Photoshop 6 Prefs). It will be re-created when you restart Photoshop. # Windows 2000: Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\6.0\Adobe Photoshop 6 Settings.
