It was pointed out to me many years ago to use the proper oil/fluid for tapping/threading. I am only repeating this advice here because of my surprise at a local shop that did some threading of larger rods for me. The worker simply sprayed WD40 on the rod and proceeded to 'wind' the die continuously down the rod until he finished. This, of course, resulted in a threading job that was less than decent.
Ok, so a better way to do this simple job is first to use a threading oil made for the job. WD40 is far from a cure all. Use cutting oil. Next, and just as important, is to clear the die by reversing it's direction after maybe even a 1/2 turn. This process allows the cuttings to be evacuated form the die, and not interfere with the new threads being cut.
