When I first got my camera, I could download the pics to my laptop just fine with the usb cord that came with it. I lost this cord and got a new one. Now I do what the manual says, plug the usb into the camera and into the laptop and then press "on" button on the camera. Usually this would automatically start the transfer but nothing happens. The light turns green on the camera and it beeps but the screen stays black and the computor doesn't recognize that anything is attached. I don't know why this would happen just because I got a new cord??? Any suggestions?
I have a Intel Mac Powerbook running OS10.5.8
On a coolpix 100, the default setting is that the camera is charged by the computer through the USB cable. You need switch that OFF.
While the camera still does not show as usb device, you can access it through the Nikon transfer program AND through iPhoto

lens error. lens comes out than back in turns off than on and goes back in and out than says lens error. this camera is only about 8 months old. i have a feeling if it were to get repaired some else will go wrong. doesn't seem like a reliable product very disappointed in nikon and most likely never will buy their products again. I have the same problem, when I turn on my Coolpix S202 the lens goes in and out several times but then I get the "Lens Error" message. My camera is also only 6 months old and I am also afraid if I get it fixed something else will go wrong. I will also never buy another Nikon product again, very dissapointed. Thought Nikon was a better manufacturer than that. I'm having exactly the same problem! Everything I read keeps saying "Oh, you must have dropped it on the floor or in water" but I've done no such thing. It's only 5 months old and I've barely used it! I'm so frustrated. I wish there was some advice as to what to do. I guess I'm going to have to pound the pavement and see if there is anyone who can fix it...*sigh*
My nikon coolpix s210 had a "lens error" after several months of use. The tapping of the camera against my hand did not work. Eventually i did use the method of putting my nail under the lens and pulling as I tried turning the camera on. I had to apply a good amount of force and was afraid i would break the camera, but after doing this several times, the lens did click back into place.

How do I update my Nikon Coolpix S210 camera firmware?
There are no official firmware updates for the S210. The currently available firmware updates are posted at
http://support.nikontech.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13783
If you do want to update it with some other piece of firmware, simply put it onto an SD card in a folder named "firmware" and plug the card into the camera.

I recently arrived in East Africa and forgot to bring the battery charger for my Nikon Coolpix S210. Do you know if it is possible to charge the battery via the USB cord using a USB adapter for a wall outlet?
No. In order to keep down the size and weight, the camera does not include the circuitry needed to charge the battery.

My Nikon Coolpix S3100 won't turn on
I had the same problem, and many other people have had this issue. The camera sat for too long, and the battery fully discharged. It needs to be reset. In order to do that, remove the battery and memory card. Replace only the battery, and plug it in. You should see a green light flashing to the right of the LCD screen. That means it is now charging. Replace your memory card, and let it charge before trying to use it.
