Perhaps the paper INDETECT SWITCH is faulty and so there is a false input to the CPU. You need to check this sensor/switch on the paper transport section where it is mounted.
Also check for loose connections on the main board, check for fault in the main board if the sensor seems to test correct.

Adjusting the volume on an HP Officejet All-in-One
Follow these steps to adjust the volume of the various fax sounds.
Adjust the rings and beep volume
1.Press the Setup button P(wrench).
2.Press the arrow buttons (Left and right) to select Basic Fax Setup , and then press OK .
3.Press the arrow buttons (Left and right) to select Rings and Beep Volume , and then press OK .
4.Press the arrow buttons (Left and right) to adjust the volume, and then press OK .
Adjust the phone line and monitor volume
1.Press the Setup button (wrench).
2.Press the arrow buttons (Left and right ) to select Basic Fax Setup , and then press OK .
3.Press the arrow buttons (Left and right ) to select Phone Line, Monitor Volume , and then press OK .
4.Press the arrow buttons (Left and right ) to adjust the volume, and then press OK .
Adjust the handset volume
When you receive a call, pick up the handset of the product, and then press the arrow buttons (Left and right ) to adjust the handset volume.

1. Press the Cancel button on the product to stop the current print job, if necessary.
2. In the software program that you are using to print, click File , and then click Print .
3. Make sure that the appropriate product is selected.
4. Depending on the program, click Properties , Options , Printer Setup , or Printer . The Print Properties dialog box opens.
5. Click the Features or Print/Quality tab.
6. In the Paper Type or Type Is drop-down list, click the appropriate paper type.
7. In the Size or Size Is drop-down list, click A5 or Legal .
8. Click OK to save the settings.
9. In the Print dialog box, click Print or OK to start printing.

Remove your printer from the PC and uninstall the printer software. Now reinstall the printer software and connect the Printer to be detected and installed. Check printer properties to see the ink levels.
Use head cleaning before a test is taken . It is possible that the head is not reacting to the need of the command , can be an issue with ink drying , can also be poor ink cartridge contacts

replace the catridges one by one

choose fast draft on printer menu and also set on printer setting, this will use less ink

setup-basic fax setup- ring and beep volume

Does it have an ink cartridge? Is the top part of it open a little and not seated down on the machine?

Download the device-driver.
Install it.
Print a test-page.

Is it network or usb connected ???

Remember this when you install again.You also have to chose network or usb
Also if its a 32/64 bit system you running.

Disconnect the USB Cable from printer
Unplug the power cord from printer ( while printer is on )
Holding the power button on printer, connect it back.

Later connect the USB Cable. try to scan. IT should work.

make sure when you hit print and the dialog box comes up...make sure that the PRINTER is highlighted not the fax, scanner,copier or office etc...I had the same problem when I first got mine.. its a great machine also check that the printer is set as your default printer.. youll see a check and default next to the printer name in the printers folder.. and make sure your not all jammed up with pages to print open the printer folder (usuall in your startup in the bottom ri side where your start up items go.. if you have any questions email me back good luck

PS worst u have to do is delete the entire printer/fax etc set up and run the disc again. peace out
