The tray should extend to the 14" length size, pull the tray all the way out and look for the unlock (green) lever...Extend the tray to the proper size and then install the paper. You will most likely need to go to your paper size settings in the menu of the printer and tell the machine that you changed the tray to 8.5 x 14...usually under paper tray settings. If you do not have a way to extend the tray then you do not have the option to run 8.5 x 14 paper and an optional tray will need to be purchased, or the bypass tray can be used but only 10-15 sheets at a time. probably a cable is loose or not connected for display. printer could be faulty or you mught fix easily.

This is a problem with the formatter board, try doing an nv ram ( turn off the printer and hold down the right arrow and the cancel button, turn the printer back on and continue holding until you see permanent storage init). If this doesn't work call hp tech support 1800 334 5144 and ask for a case number. This printer has a service note which will cover the formatter for 2 years. Al

Does the printer otherwise print? If so, then the panel is dead.

Something is gone on the unit and most likely getting hot or is out of sink. Laser products eventually wear out because they use heat to do the work they were made to perform. If nothing seems out of sink this happens "out of the blue" so to speak, it time for a replacement.

Clean a feeder or replace one or more damaged light diods.

First, make sure that the firmware is up to date on the machine. Current revison is 20100902. Download from www.hp.com. That may not fix the problem, actually probably won't but can't hurt to try. I have found that this problem is usually caused by a bad ADF cable or board. Either way, unless you have a donor machine you will need to purchase a new ADF assembly. Part number is CB532-67903.

some printers will not know how much toner is left after the warning, so at one moment it can just start printing light in vertical lines, this means the toner is near empty (but you can shake the cartridge slight, to get some more pages, if you dont have new cart. at hand).

It is probably defective.
