how long have you been using this LG recorder of yours and have you ever successfully recorded from DVD to HHD in the past?

From the look of things, I think the laser (lens) of your recorded has depreciated and doesn't have the ability to burn/record. This usually happens when a when a recorder's laser is weak.

Being weak does not mean the lens is bad or that it will not play DVD discs. But note that recording with a player requires a very active laser.

Recorders usually depreciates gradually by not recording completely, then when it gets a bit bad, it would start skipping DVD disc and later not load.

Open up your LG Recorder. You should see the HDD on the left, the DVD drive in the middle and a circuit board on the right..

Now, look at the back of the dvd drive.. you should see a power connector and a standard IDE interface..

Remove both of those connections carefully. Remove the screws in the black bevels on the sides of the drive and slowly pry out the drive by lifting the IDE interface side above the main board and pulling it out while slipping out the black clips on top of the tray side..

Now that it is done, take your new dvd drive.. you may want to remove the faceplate or at least the plate from the tray ..(slide it upwards.. it should slip out ) .. Place it where the old dvd drive used to be.. do the connections and your good to go..

Before closing, Check to see if the drive is functioning. Close up.

I have swapped drives on my LG many times and even upgraded the HDD.. I have used mainly LG and sony drives..

Mine was originally shipped with 80GB some 3 years ago.. I had put in a 160 GB and now will be putting in a 250 GB as the other is already full and i like to keep those old recordings..

Hi... There are a number of places online that sell remotes for your unit
Do a websearch on your model # and add "remote" to the search

I've had "Record-blocking signals detected" on my LG RH398H-M recorder off & on since I bought it almost a year ago. Also other minor problems. LG replaced the recorder 4 times with no change in problems. I became suspicious when I found that when these messages came on I could switch to any channel, digital or analog, even the weather channel, and I would still get the same message for about 5 minutes & then everything would be OK again. Recently I finally got the chance to try something. When the message came on I disconnected the input to the recorder and the message still came on! Again, I got the message "Record-blocking signal detected" with ABSOLUTELY NO INPUT CONNECTED to the recorder!!! Of course it's impossible for the recorder to be receiving blocking signals when there's nothing connected to the inputs. I wrote to LG again and threatened a law suit but so far they've been ignoring me. I would like to hear from anyone who can duplicate the above.

The problem is usually caused by dirty lens. Follow the indications in this link. I wrote the article to answer to the same common problem:My player does not read disks.

Cleaning lens is the most common fix for the problem. If that does not work, then the internal drive must be replaced.

It is quite a common problem. What I do in my shop is to open the unit, and replace the DVD writer (is the same as a standard PC one) with another IDE DVD writer. (any model will work, but I try keep LG with LG etc)
Once you replaced the drive all should be back to normal. (I also use LG dvd writers on Daewoo recorders)

Basically your only viable option is to burn them to a dvd, and then rip the dvd to your computer. There is a ton of software out their available to do that.

Dvd+r disks are the least compatible to most devices.

Try using Dvd-r instead.

usually when it says "no disc" is when condensation will form on the circuit boards.

Best thing to do is bring it into a warm room, plug it in and turn and wait 2 hrs roughly then see if it functions.

Sadly, that seems like a hardware issue that will cost more to fix than to to just have the unit replaced.

The generic answer is yes you can. You will need to use a software app like Pinnacle Studio V10.5 onwards (currently V14) or similar II think that Roxio have a product too) that will take raw video format from the DVD Player / recorder and convert it to MPEG2 files that you can then convert to any other format. You can then edit them and put them back tot he DVD Player / Recorder in the correct format for viewing on TV. This will also allow you to burn customised discs with TV content etc.

When you have had a dvd_rw in your computer; your LG won't except them anymore.In the next steps I'll show you how to solve that problem
first take a new (unused dvd_rw)
Initalize the new dvd_rw in your LG.
write " LG master dvd_rw" on it and put it in a safe place.
when you've a dvd'_rw used in your computer but you want to burn something from your LG on it take next steps

take the master LG and put it in your computer
start Nero or an other burning program
choose disc copy and copy the master to the used dvd_rw.
when done , take the copy and put it in the LG.
this time the LG will exept the copy.
Put the master LG again away

Try and go into the hdd/dvd setup menu and change the audio output from digital to analog or vice versa.
